Leo Laporte's Tech Guy Podcast.
Great computer, phone, home theatre, security, and photography talk. Plus people can call in and ask questions and he answers them. Very informative.

This and Filmspotting. Also The Tobolowsky Files is very fun if you want to want to know more about the life of an actor.

And A Life Well Wasted is like Tobolowsky Files but less regular and about the gaming industry.
It all started with a bang.

My favorite non gaming podcasts include:

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - Informative and well though out analysis of historical events and people.
The Memory Palace - Short and interesting stories of the past.
Stuff You Missed in History Class - Topics include: D.B. Cooper, Salem Witch Trials, Elizabeth Bathory, The Opium Wars, all told by two women that are incredibly hot in my imagination based on their level of intelligence.
Stuff You Should Know - Topics include: Agent Orange, Controlling Dreams, Bizarre Ways to Die, Twinkies, Spontaneous Human Combustion.

I'm sure some of you are familiar with the following gaming related podcasts:
The Oddcast
At 1Up
The Gamespy Debriefings
IGN Gamescoop
Irrational Behavior
A Life Well Wasted

If you're a Kevin Smith fan:

Smodcast - Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier http://smodcast.com/main.html
Tell 'Em Steve Dave - The Smodcast guest stars got their own podcast. The first few were painful but it's now funnier than Smodcast imho. Recorded from Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash. http://smodcast.com/stevedave/index.html

I second the recommendation for SModcast.

Here are a few from my phone's RSS feed:

The Adam Carolla Show. (Dude will rant about everything. He is also genuinely amusing)
Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. (NPR weekly news quiz. Funny stuff)
The Onion Radio News (parody mini news articles. Usually 2 minutes or less)
The Instance (if you play WoW)

Re: Podcast Recommendations

Postby Konanda » Aug 26th, 2010 @ 7:41pm

I would add to the list of Recommendations with:

videogames: Player One Podcast

Music: CBC Radio 3 Podcast, Japanator Radio, The Sunshine Show, The R3-30, Breakfast Club, CBC Radio 3 Sessions,

News and Interviews about current affairs and culture: CBC News World Report, Mansbridge One on One, The Hour (video podcast), CBC Radio 3 Extended Play, Mansbridge One On One

Science and Medicine: Quirks and Quarks, White Coat Black Art, 60 Second Science, 60 Second Psych, Astronomy Cast, Science Talk, IEEE Spectrum Podcast

Also it's not really a podcast but when I'm at my computer I'll occasionally listen to 91.8 The Fan, which is a web radio site. I also do this with CBC Radio 3 which again is web radio.

Oh and I've started to listen to The Bottom Line with David Suzuki. I'm still pondering on if I'm going to keep subscribing or not though. I kind of do this with the myriad of CBC podcasts though dropping them occasionally only to pick it back up again.

Like I was listening to Promised Land for a bit but than it just started to sound too self-serving and a little too pretentious. Basically the entire premise of that podcast is the host interviews some refugees about their story getting to Canada. I think the last one I listened to was Escape from the USA which was about an army brat and deserter who came up here during the Vietnam war. I might try listening to it again though since it has an actual definite end date (or at least break) being only 10 episodes and 9 have been posted so far.

I should also note I don't listen to or watch all of these for every episode that comes out.

ByteJacker- Indie Games

GiantBomb- The laughiest podcast ever.

Geekbox- You are here.

Game Scoop- Also very funny.

Podcast Beyond- PS3 podcast that's also funny.

Nerdist- Singled Out guy talking to people.

Comedy Death-Ray Radio- One of the best podcasts.

Doug Loves Movies- Potheads talk about movies and play movie centric games (Only two)

Gamers With Jobs- Even Ryan Scott recommends it.

A Life Well Wasted- You should already know.

Mobcast- It's not about the mafia.

Totally Rad Show- A pretty good movie/video game/comic/everything rad video podcast.

Diggnation- Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht get drunk and read Digg stories, they hardly stay on topic though.

Most of what I listen to is video game related. All of what I listen to is funny.

Good, I'm not the only person that sees/hears Chris Hardwick and immediately thinks "that's the guy from Singled Out" despite the numerous other things he's done since.

Postby Raine » Aug 27th, 2010 @ 1:56pm

I really enjoy Dan Carlin's political podcast Common Sense. He's a really thoughtful guy, and I appreciate that. He questions things and offers possible solutions, always acknowledging that any proposed idea could either not work or even make things worse. He's wise enough to change his mind on issues when new facts come to light, and has no problem dropping an idea if it's proven to be ineffective. He has a libertarian point of view, but most of his views are colored by the fact that the current political situation is a corrupt mess.

I also really enjoy his history show, but those are few and far between.

Oh, and you must listen to Retronauts. It's pretty much the only gaming podcast where the archived shows are worth listening to. Since they only cover retro games episodes don't feel dated. An episode on Mario, Metal Gear, Pokemon or the Master System from years ago is just as good a listen as it was when it was new.

I loved the Retronauts episode about survival horror with Jenn Frank. I wish she still did podcasts. She has a very likable personality.

I listened to a few episode of Retronauts. It was actually cool, but it's almost intimidating to listen to because those fuckers know so much about video games. It was like a video I saw on Giant Bomb of Ryan asking Jeff to do those "n degrees of separation" between people, games, concepts, etc from their site and he nailed the shit out of every one of them.

They're very knowledgeable about certain subjects that interest them greatly. But others, they're flying by the seats of their pants. Personally, it's fun to listen to because they know more about some old stuff than I do.
