It heartens me a little bit, the frequency that I see "Jap" used as a shorthand for Japanese and not as an epithet. I really, really think we need to start taking back a lot of these words that have arbitrarily been assigned negative connotation over the years. Like why the fuck is "oriental" an epithet? It directly refers to something as "from the orient" like what even is the fuck?

Using oriental is fine for objects. People aren't 'oriental' because they aren't things.

Jap will stop being a negative connotation when people stop using it that way.

So basically never

I don't remember the last time I ever heard someone refer to a Japanese person as "a jap" and even if they did, I don't get its negative connotation anymore. It's not like calling someone a nip or a zipperhead, which have hurtful, violent origins and can only really be used to disparage. I would refer to someone from Japan as "a Japanese person" the same way I would refer to someone from Britain as "a British person" and "Brit" isn't an epithet. I think Jap needs to be fully taken back. It has no place among actually offensive epithets.

The word Orient and all its derivatives originally weren't even specific to East Asia, it used to just be the word for Asia being what was east of Europe, the word itself being derived by the historical astronomical term for east. Specifically before the mid 1800s or so it was used to refer to refer to what we call the Near and Mid East now in particular and sometimes North Africa. The definition kept stretching further eastward into Asia (relative to Europe) as Europeans started engaging with cultures that were further east of them over time, and then eventually its original definition was dropped as European and North American nations valued East and Southeast Asia in terms of trade, colonization, etc.

For instance if you went back to the 1800s and earlier in terms of art and looked at some of the Oriental painters the depictions are of the Arabian world featuring bazaars, harems, hookahs, dudes in turbans and other things that Europeans found interesting about the Near and Mid East.

In fact in contemporary German the word Orient still only refers to the area between the Near East and India and the German word for Asian is used when talking about East and Southeast Asia

Yeah and he completly missed the point, referring to Oriental painters is with regard's to the subject of the painting being depections of places and concepts that the Europeans found enticing about the Orient, which today we would commonly refer to as the Near and Middle East Asia. The actual painters themselves were Europeans.

In hindsight I should have used the word Orientalist instead to avoid confusion.

Also for example this is what I'm referring to.

Picked up some boxes full of my old stuff from my parents house on Saturday and I've been digging thru it and it has been an absolute treasure trove. I've got more than a thousand USD worth of old SNES games, most of them complete in box. I've also got a massive collection of Magic the Gathering cards from around 4th-5th edition and all the expansions around that era. I don't even want to go thru all of these, but I'm never going to use them again so I honestly have no clue what to do with them. I'm sure their condition would not be considered good because they've been mostly in regular ass cardboard boxes with no other kind of protection, some of them without even a cardboard lid on. On top of all that, I've got about 2-3 dozen starter decks from the MYRIAD collectible card games that were flooding the market in the mid 90s, because they were literally handing these out at Gen Con the couple years I attended. Star Wars CCG, Shadowrun CCG, some pirate themed CCG, some feudal Chinese themed CCG, generic-ass D&D themed CCG, Highlander CCG, Dragonball Z CCG. Got a bunch of early edition Pokemon CCG cards too, including about 2 dozen foils, but time and basement dankness has warped all of those so that they're all really badly arced and not playable at all.

Other spoils include old D&D books and modules (I never really played D&D, just bought books for it for some reason), about 2 dozen PS2 era strategy guides, a bunch of PS2-era preorder incentives, like art books and music CD's, tons of posters, some of which are totally rad (I have a 90s era Shadowrun poster that I'm seriously thinking about getting framed, even tho it came folded and never left that state, so it's creased up real good). I threw away a few hundred burned CD ROMs with anime on them and a few dozen old bootleg Chinese Gundam DVDs that I got off ebay and never watched because they were in such shit condition when I got them (some cracked, most didn't even have proper, readable English subs, etc). I have a full run of Great Teacher Onizuka manga that I read and don't know what to do with. Bunch of old, awful PC games. I have a set of 2 inch Disgaea figures that were super limited direct order from NIS's website a few months after that first game came out. They're all still intact but most of the figures have socketed joints that don't stay in for shit, so they fall apart unless completely untouched.

Probably the best thing I found was a Pokemon memo sized notebook that I was using as a journal for my first year of community college mandated journal, ca. 1999. 18-year-old LiQuid!'s diary!!! I read thru a couple pages and it's just about as embarrassing as you could imagine. The very first line was a rumination on parents' seemingly sole purpose on the earth being to suck and be shitty! It gets even better from there, I assure you. I'm real tempted to transcribe and post some of it for yucks, but I dunno if I want to put any evidence that I at any time sucked onto the internet. It eventually turns into a general "notes" book that I used to scribble video game shit on, and a sketchbook that I have a bunch of godawful weeby drawings in. It's really kind of an amazing thing. It's a horrible thing. But kind of amazing.

Anyways, I don't know what to do with any of this stuff. So many remnants of my past life as a weeb and mega nerd. Aside from the SNES games none of this shit is worth money but just seeing it all again is flooding me with memories and I dunno if I wanna let it all go.

I must have been born like 60 or something because I never had a diary or any other place where I ruminated on how lame parents were. I thought my folks were pretty cool most of the time.

Also, weigh the GTO. If shipping wasn't too crazy I might like to get them from you.

Old strategy guides are surprisingly valuable depending on their condition and the games they're for, so you should look it up. Same with some of your preorder shit, but not all of it. The cards are probably not worth much, but you could probably package them as a blind box on ebay and sell 'em.

About the MtG cards, its worth a look on a site like http://shop.tcgplayer.com/magic to see if any of the cards you have are really worth anything even in hevaily played or damaged condition. For instance Force of Will which is a strong uncommon from an expansion during that time period and never reprinted and is worth $60+ damaged and up to $120ish at near mint. There are also several other cards that are worth between $5-$30 dollars at lightly to hevaily played condition. However you'll probably have to sell it through the internet since all that stuff is only usable in Legacy or Vintage formats so most brick and mortar shops won't deal with them unless they have customers interested in those formats.

Can't say for Pokemon or the other CCGs but if they are popular enough they are probably listed on tcgplayer and might be worth something at least.

It's thousands and thousands of cards. I don't even want to look thru them all, nor would I even be able to recognize good cards if I did. They're going back in a crate and being sealed up until I'm dead then someone who knows me will probably just end up throwing them away or lotting them to some nerd who'll discover his fortune.
