Mardock Scramble- 7 volumes

Why me? It was to be the last thought a young prostitute, Rune Balot, would ever have…as a human anyway. Taken in by a devious gambler named Shell, she became a slave to his cruel desires and would have been killed by his hand if not for a private investigator and his self-aware Universal Tool, Eufcoque. Now a cyborg, Balot has not only physical powers, but the ability to disrupt social environments. She chases after Shell, his partner-in-crime Boiled, and faces down a variety of insane villains in this pulse-pounding cyberpunk noir adventure(synopsis from RawManga)

This was an OK series. The background premise sounds promising but I found the story line go all over the place. The best bit had Balot fighting off a group of sadistic cyborg mercenaries and losing her humanity as she started abusing Eufcoque power. The worst had her gambling at a casino. Maybe it's because this is a novel adaptation but I felt that the storyline was too uneven in quality. The artwork is very good and I really liked the design of Eufcoque as a tiny hamster. Apparently they've made an anime movie so I think I'll look it up.

Summary
For the first 14 years of his life, Yukio Tanaka has been one heck of a boring guy. He has no hobbies, weak taste in music, and only a small vestige of a personality. He yearns for an exciting life, but his shy, and somewhat neurotic personality make him his own worst enemy. Little does he know that his life will be forever changed when he meets Ryusuke Minami, a wild and unpredictable 16-year old fresh from America, who happens to be in a rock-and-roll band named after his Frankenstein-like patched dog--Beck. (from ten manga)

I very much enjoyed this series. I enjoyed the characters, writing, the anime, and the theme of this manga. The art style is hard to get used to at first but don't let that tern you off to the series. it has ended but don't be fooled by the number of chapters, each one is about 50 pages long so even at 103 chapters it's a length of a read. Even if you have seen the anime I recommend reading the series as it goes way past when the anime ends and has a nice wrap up.

An amazing series. I hear the live action movie was also good.

Higanjima- 33 volume(complete)

Image
Higanjima: Saigo no 47 Hiai(the last 47 days)- 6 volumes(ongoing)
Akira's brother, Atsuhi, has been missing for two years. And recently a mysterious woman appeared and told him that she can take him to the island of Higanjima where she says she saw Atsushi. But she also asked that he bring a few friends along with him...(synopsis from RawManga)

Yeah, it's a horror manga about vampires... but it's still really great! I like the vampire mythology in this series; when vampires suck human blood, the humans get paralyzed and piss themselves. Also if you're infected with vampire blood, you become a vampire(like in 28 days later) and then you have the chance of turning into a crazy monster. Author Kouji Matsumoto strength is in his ability to create really sick monsters the protagonists have to fight.

Here are some examples.
Image Image Image

Too bad he can't draw different facial expressions for shit though. Look at how similar these crying faces look.
Image Image Image

Regardless, Higanjima is a really great manga. It's original run ended and now it's on part 2. DO NOT watch the live action movie because it SUCKS.

title: Kono Kanojo wa Fiction desu.
summary: Lead character is a naive boy who's fallen in love with an older girl who everyone considers a genius writer. He's so in love in fact, that he has forgotten for the last 2 months about his secret hobby. For the past 10 years he has been writing the "character profile" of a single girl. Her birthdate, personality, hobbies, conversations, etc.... is all recorded in a large pile of notebooks. All this time this fictional girl has been his friend and lover, but now that he is in love with a real girl he decided to throw them all away. In order to "purify" the notebooks, he decided to burn them at a nearby shrine. To his surprise, the senpai he's in love with was also there. It starts to rain and as they talk the girl confesses she's having trouble writing her novel due to inexperience. As the storm gets even stronger, the lead character believes that since she confessed her "weakness" to him it is ok for him to show her his own "secret". Filled with courage, the boy opens the bag where he brought all the notebooks... except that instead of notebooks, the bag now contains the girl (naked of course) he's been creating for the past 10 years!!

So this manga aimed to answer what happens if you obsess and put passion into something for years and it takes a shape once you have a chance at something else. It's a love comedy triangle with weirdness from the now alive creation of a boy/man's imagination. Not a lot of chapters out yet so it may get more interesting as time goes on but we'll see how it goes

Btooom!- 8 volumes(on going)

Sakamoto Ryuuta is an unemployed 22-year-old who lives with his mother. In the real world, there may be nothing really special about him, but online, he's one of the world's top players of the combat game "BTOOOM"!
One day, he awakes in what appears to be a tropical island, though he has no memory of how or why he has come to be there. While wandering around, Ryuuta sees someone and calls out for help. The stranger responds by throwing a bomb at him! Now Ryuuta realizes both that his life is in danger and that he has somehow been trapped in a real-life version of his favorite game! Will Ryuuta be able to survive long enough to figure out how and why he ended up here?(synopsis from RawScans)

I decided to read this manga because the volume covers look like 360 game. It's an alright manga, feels a lot like Battle Royale with characters hunting each other for survival. Having the contestants use bombs is a pretty original idea. The art is fine but the storylines are not really original: lots of betrayal between characters, learning to trust each other, using traps and tricks to survive. If you liked Battle Royale, I think it might be worth checking out.

Bakuman- 20 volumes(complete)

It’s not easy to become and live as a mangaka, as Mashiro knows from his late uncle.
At 9th grade, while trying to keep up with reality, school and then a normal job, he left his notebook with a sketch of Azuki, a girl he likes. Takagi, a first-rate student found it and tries to convince Mashiro to draw a manga with his story. Mashiro doesn’t like the idea and declines.
Takagi, however, sticks to his dream and found out that Azuki wants to be a voice actress and has already gotten a good reply from a production company. Takagi then brought Mashiro to her house and told her his dream… Mashiro then tells her that he will write a manga with Takagi and will ask Azuki to voice their anime.
Out of confusion, Mashiro asks her if their dreams become reality, will she marry him? She says yes, only if their dreams become true, and not otherwise!! Now, the lives of wannabe mangakas begin!!!(synopsis from RawManga)

Bakuman is a very good manga. I hesitate to say it's great because I didn't really enjoy the series as much towards the end. I think a story about 2 teenagers trying to be mangaka works best when they are struggling and battling adversity. But as the 2 protagonists grow in their ability and honed their craft eventually nothing that happened really challenged them. At that point the manga continues to be enjoyable but at a lesser degree. Beck(Mongolian Chop Squad) made sure to quickly wrap up the series after the band found fame and fortune. I feel like writer Tsugumi Ohba ends up drawing out conclusions to much and writes lackluster endings(like Death Note)

A lot of people have a problem with the relationship between Mashiro and Azumi. It didn't bother me until the final moments of the series when it focuses on them. I disliked how the story focused on them because it kinda reveals the lack of depth in their relationship.

I'm complaining a lot but I really do like and recommend this series. You can tell artist Takeshi Obata has a lot of fun drawing various types of genres and writer Tsugumi Ohba is quite good at comedy. I think I'll write up the original manga about writing manga, Mangamichi(manga autobiography by Fujiko Fujio, creator of Doraemon) next.

2 quickies

Image
Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru- 47 volumes(on going)

Kohinata Minoru is a college student at a college that is popular for its sports rather than academic orientation. He starts out as a gymnast alongside his friend, Nana, but is bullied by his gymnast seniors. One evening, a karate student at the college, Mutou Ryuuji, witnesses Minoru being bullied and comes to his rescue and drags him into the world of karate. Minoru makes new friends and learns some of their dark pasts, including a shocking death that reveals motives for revenge.(synopsis from RawManga)

It's an alright martial arts manga. The series has moved away from karate to kick boxing, which is weird considering the title, but it's still an entertaining series. The artwork is very good.

Image
Kanojo o Mamoru 51 no Houhou-51 Ways to Protect Her-5 volumes(completed)

Looking for a job in the famous TV station at Odaiba, college senior Jin Mishima attended the recruitment orientation. Not far away from the station, Nanako Okano, a gothic lolita trying to attend a concert, found out that her friends tricked her about the concert ticket because of jealousy. The two bumped into each other and “reunited” — they were junior high classmates — moments before an earthquake of Richter Scale 8.1 turned the island (the entire city, in fact) into ruins.(synopsis from RawManga)

A disaster manga that's pretty good and short. Unfortunately, these types of stories always have rape mobs so that wasn't very fun to read. Besides that it's a good manga. I recommend it.

Mirai Nikki- Future Diary- 12 volumes(completed)

High school 2nd year, Amano Yukiteru, is a boy who has problem making friends. He thinks of himself as a bystander and will always write down everything he sees in a cell phone diary.
Tormented by solitude, Yukiteru began to imagine things like a friend called Deus Ex Machina who is apparently the Lord of Time & Space. Seeing Yukiteru's miserable state, Deus gives him a new ability. His diary will now record events that will happen in the near future. Yukiteru is then forced to participate in a game which the winner will become Deus's successor.(synopsis from RawManga)

I remember Konanda talking to me about this series but I finally picked it up. It's an entertaining read but the constant inner dialogue of the protagonist was annoying and the big twist really put me off. Also I didn't like the ending.
Spoiler: show
As sad as it seems that Yukiteru is god on world 2 living in solitude and Yuno 3 doesn't even end up with him on world 3, I thought it would have been a better ending than some Dues ex Machina bullshit that Yuno 1's memories were put inside Yuno 3 and then that Yuno comes to save Yukiteru across time and space. Seriously? Happy Fucking End.

I hear there's an anime but I'm not that interested to check it out. If anything, the amazing side story "Mirai Nikki Paradox" that stars Aru Akise was a Rosencrantz and Guildenstern-esque comedy that was really fun to read and satiated me on this series.

Maison Ikkoku-10 wide volumes(completed)

Godai is a ronin (someone who has failed university entrance exams) living in a run down apartment house called Maison Ikkoku. Among the other residents are the nosy Ichinose, the sexy Akemi Roppongi, and the mysterious Yotsuya. The others are given to having wild parties which makes it difficult for Godai to study. Into this mayhem comes the recently widowed Kyoko as the new live-in manager. Godai falls for her, but doesn't have the nerve to tell her. As time passes, their relationship slowly develops amid life at Maison Ikkoku, despite all sorts of romantic hurdles.(synopsis from AnimeNewsNetwork)

Yeah, I DIDN'T LIKE IT. Especially compared to Rumiko Takahashi's other works. It's supposed to be a romantic comedy but I rarely laughed. The crazy inhabitants of Maison Ikkoku were really ANNOYING. I had a hard time liking any character within the series, especially main characters Godai and Kyoko. EVERY(and I do mean EVERY)problem or argument in this manga are started by simple miscommunication that gets blown out of proportion by tenfold. I understand how that can make for funny situations, but when you do it EVERY SINGLE TIME in EVERY SINGLE STORYLINE, it gets old. I can see why people like this series, but it I personally didn't enjoy it. At least it wasn't as disappointing as the Star Driver anime.

Sometimes you have the worst opinions.

Godai and Kyoko are not sympathetic characters in the beginning, but I think this is one of the few manga (or really, comics or anime in general) where there's an appreciable sense that the characters grew and became better/wiser people by the end. Godai starts out as kind of a louse and is rather complicit in the shenanigans his roommates cause for him. But by the end he's a much more mature and responsible person. Kyoko too is very temperamental and prone to misunderstandings/blowing up, but she grows up too and becomes much more trusting by the end.

Clearly you haven't read much manga(or really, comics or anime in general) if you think that this is a rare. So Godai and Kyoko become better people by the end? Big whoop, because I DIDN'T CARE BY THE END.

Flower of Life- 4 volumes(complete)

Forced to enroll in school one month late after recovering from a serious illness, Harutaro is doing his best to remain optimistic about the entire situation. The other students are working hard to make Haru feel welcome--especially his chubby, loveable pal, Shota. However, Kai Majima, president of the Manga Club and all-around hard case, seems to be the one person intent on making Harutaro’s school life a living nightmare.(synopsis from RawManga)

I decided to read it because I'm a fan of Fumi Yoshinaga's other works(Oo-Oku, Kinou Nani Tabeta?) and I was really surprised at how much I liked it. Her art is a little rough because this is one of her earlier works; female characters look very similar and not very feminine at all. But even though this is a slice of life school manga, it stood out to be because of how positive the storylines were. It's rare to read a manga that doesn't rely on stupid characters making stupid mistakes things no logical people would do. Yet Fumi is still able to make really funny and charming story. Really recommend this series and all of Fumi Yoshinaga's other stuff as well.

The lone warrior Dakazu has been fighting this fight almost all by himself. But now I'm here to post about the one manga I know that I haven't posted yet.

Hajime No Ippo
Image
I first started watching Hajime No Ippo because I wanted to get into an incredible long and dense sport anime. I had never watched one outside of alittle bit of Prince of Tennis and some Captain Tsubasa(but in spanish called Super Campiones). So I chose Ippo cause I really liked the intro and I always wanted to know more about boxing. At first I was slightly disappointed that there wasn't enough of Ippo's personal life in it but in the long run we get plenty of it. But this is the manga thread and eventually I did start reading the manga and I liked it more. It's obviously missing the music(especially season one) and stuff but the manga is just more plausible cause time is non specific. In the show the people in the crowd explain what's happening as the fight is happening. Sometimes they have whole paragraphs of dialog but when the action goes back to the fight nothing has happened. Its a huge suspension of disbelief in the anime and less so in the manga. Also there's that thing called animation and there's always too few frames.
I stream games some times. Come and watch www.twitch.tv/darfox8 These are my Highlights.

Ippo is good, so good that I did some translations for the scan group. HOWEVER, the series has been taking it's sweet ass time moving the story forward. The last Ippo fight was so drawn out that I almost considered dropping it. Regardless it's a really good manga, just super fucking long.

title: Boku wa hajikko suki
summary: From Mangahelpers:

Noda Haruko has hatched a plot to get tasty lunches; she's put a love letter in a paper airplane and tossed it out into the world. By chance, it ends up in the hands of a lonely boy named Katou Seiji. Haruko confesses her "love" for him, and her hope that he'll become her husband and make her delicious lunches. Surprisingly, Seiji agrees, and becomes her boyfriend-chef. Seiji allows himself to be swept away by her childish enthusiasm, but he keeps trying to find ways to make their relationship more 'real'-- by holding hands, kissing, or simply being alone together. Haruko and Seiji navigate their unusual relationship among their friends and classmates, who all have their share of comedic troubles! [tethysdust]

So the translated chapters just started. It's a light series so far, it's silly, it's a little ecchi. In all not too bad but not serious

Sidonia no Kishi=Knights of Sidonia(7 volumes-on going)

Risking his life to ensure humanity's survival, Tanikaze Nagate rides out in his silver armour, the Tsugumori! Thousands of years have passed since the Gauna destroyed the Solar System. The enormous seed ship, Sidonia, travels through space while propagating and producing humans. Brought up in the lowest decks of Sidonia, a young man, Tanikaze Nagate, becomes a Guardian trainee, and is authorized to pilot the outdated but historically renowned Tsugumori. The battle with Nagate's life at stake begins now!(synopsis by RawManga)

HOLY SHIT THIS MANGA IS AMAZING! A new work by Tsutomu Nihei(who's work BLAME! I wrote about) this series is fantastic! I'm really glad that this manga takes place in an original universe because all of his other works took place in the same world and that got kinda old. Nihei's take on mobile suits is great; he's able to use his strengths in creating weird biological monsters and he's added robot design to his repertoire for some super awesome results :P . He's able to use his architect background again in the interior designs within Sidonia, which also look AMAZING. The story is surprisingly straight forward and explanatory compared to BLAME! but I actually love that. Basically, I dig every part of this manga. Check it out for yourselves.

Gaku-18 volumes(complete)

Shimazaki Sanpo loves mountains. He loves them so much he calls himself a mountain-man and lives in the alpines, lending his hand as a volunteer in a rescue team, finding people, dead or alive, in the Japanese alpines. The alpines can be a beautiful place, but it's also a dangerous, dangerous place.(synopsis from RawScans)

Finally got a chance to read the last 2 volumes. Although the artwork of the characters is a bit rough, I really enjoyed this series. I've read other manga that focus on mountain climbing but there isn't another series that depicts the often gruesome aftermath of climbing accidents. That being said, this isn't a story that only focuses just on mountain rescue. Each chapter/storyline focuses on both main and new characters dealing with different situations on the mountain. Sometimes these intense with life or death and other times they are relaxed hikes. The main character's overall brightness and enthusiasm always help others look at the positive side of things, which makes for (mostly) uplifting stories. The ending was really good too. They've made at least 1 live action movie but I don't know much about that. Definitely recommend you go read it yourself.

Time to revive this thread because I've been reading a lot of serialized manga magazines and I thought I'd do a run through of each one and the series that I enjoy. I'll start with Shounen Jump because it's most popular and I've done it before.

NARUTO
Image
Yup, it's still running and will probably continue into next year....but recent events have been extra annoying.
Spoiler: show
Getting Sasuke back on the good side seemed like a twist made for pleasing fans but it didn't bother me too much. I take more offense with them trying to make Sakura a powerful ninja, after I felt like they threw all her character development out the window when she couldn't bring herself to kill Sasuke earlier.

One Piece
Image
Another long running series that shows no signs of ending. I didn't particularly like the last arc because the over abundance of characters is making the story and battles feel bloated. I think my interest in this series is slowly waning.

Bleach
Image
       HAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sucks now... Yup, it officially has lost popularity and gone down the toilet.
Spoiler: show
Ichigo is a QUINCY!!!!!

So stupid and I'll continue reading this train wreck to see how much it sucks.

Toriko
Image
Still awesome as ever and I'm glad that it's enjoying a lot of success.

Assassination Classroom
Image
From the author of Demon Detective Neuro Nogami, it follows an alien creature that can move at MACH speeds who teaches High School. The students are asked by the Government to assassinated this creature, who's announced that he'll destroy the world in 1 year.
I really enjoyed Neuro and I really like this new series he's started as well. Good stuff!

Haikyu!!
Image
Still going strong and I still like it a lot. Apparently it's the new "Prince of Tennis" because this series has a huge female fan base. Gotta love all the sexy bishounen jumping around!!!

Kuroko's Basket
Image
Continues to be good. Maybe I'll go back and watch the anime later.

Gintama
Image
This is a series where I actually prefer the anime to the manga. Still good though.

Beelzebub
Image
It's alright but I feel like it's falling into that manga troupe of continuously introducing badder/stronger enemies. This is confounded by the school setting.

Sket Dance
Image
It's ending soon but I think it never outstayed it's welcome so I say good job. Want to watch the anime for this as well.

Nisekoi
Image
Yeah...despite complaining about the series earlier, I think it's done an excellent job with it's execution. It's getting an anime adaptation so good on them I guess.

Shokugeki no Souma
Image
Thought it was hilarious that the artist of this manga used to draw hentai manga. 1st chapter even had tentacles! It's definitely pushing the sexy factor as a selling point. As a food manga, I think it's alright but I've read better stuff.

The Disaster of Psi Kusuo Saiki
Image
This one really surprised me. I didn't read it at all when it came out but I took the time to read the 1st volume and I think this manga is great. I like the silent protagonist who just want's to be a normal teenager and the crazy cast of characters that surround him. Really great comedy manga.

World Trigger
Image
Manga by the author of Kashikoi Inu Lilienthal(which I loved but was canceled). I want this manga to succeed so badly because I think the artist is really great. This new manga is better suited for Shounen Jump but I'm afraid that it's already low in the popularity rankings and will be canceled soon(which is bullshit compared to some of the other crap that's serialized right now)

Soul Catchers
Image
New manga by the author of Light Wing. I think the setting of a guy who can see the souls(emotions) of others is going to become a conductor of a High School Band is pretty unique. I also hope this series succeeds because I want to read more of it.

Cross Manage

A horrible manga about Girls Lacross. I think it sucks and I hope it gets canceled soon.

So that's it! I will say that the 2 new series(Mutou Black and Smokey B.B.) haven't really impressed me and anything else I don't read.

Necro-ing this thread just to be like LOLLLLLLLLOLOLOLOL.

Naruto is so bad now.

I keep wondering how it could get worse and it keeps delivering.

Fucking plot no jutsu. I guess Naruto decided to just abandon any semblance of logic/consistency.

That series became too much when they fucking brought everyone back to life. I just couldn't continue. I knew at that point it wouldn't recover.

Glad to hear it's just been getting even worse since I dropped it. Means I was right. Which we all know how rarely I get to say that. So thanks Naruto for letting me be right about something.

It's not worse when it's been crap since the time jump. It's simply towing the line.

Wrong again.... Classic meDot

Besides, Naruto doesn't have shit on Bleach. Kubo Tite actually brought back the Arancarr(fanservice no one wanted) because he's so desperate.

Nobody is going to rake you over coals for liking Naruto. It had a unique world when it started that a lot of people dug.

Problem is that current Naruto is lame. It's going through every cliche shounen manga final battle trope while pandering to the fans in the worst ways possible. Naruto peaked with Sasuke leaving and it really hit the shit after they retconned what happened to Kakashi.

Bleach used to be Jump's Trifecta with One Piece and Naruto. That series forgot to end after the Aizen arc and now it's crossed over into pure insanity/shit. How the proud have fallen.
