Audible

Postby DerBonk » Apr 15th, 2009 @ 10:40am

As audible.com is a sponsor of the podcast, I thought it'd only be appropriate to have an audible thread. I'm a big fan personally, as I don't have a lot of time to sit down and read books and audio books (especially English ones, over here in Germany at least) are pretty expensive. I actually had a Platinum plan for a couple of months, but canceled that just to register a new account using the Geekbox referrer. I didn't get the free book of course, but I hope that credit goes to the Geekbox anyway.

Has anyone here used audible before? Any good audio books to recommend?
Perhaps the guys should have recommendations on the show (works very well on TwiT).

Anyway, I'm currently listening to "Red Mars" as I have written elsewhere. It's in audible's new "enhanced" format, which finally comes with good cover art (at least it looks good on my iPhone) and the sound quality is way better. A very, very good book too. The reader is kinda on and off, but good enough. It is pretty long (24 hours) and just one credit! This could be yours for absolutely free, just register at audiblepodcast.com/geekbox!

So, yeah, I love audible. DRM sucks though :/

I use audible for all of my audio book needs. Love it, especially now with the higher quality ipod/iphone files. Selection is good too, though there are some huge notable absences from their lineup.

I'm currently reading The Diamond Age from Audible. Previously read Mass Effect: Ascension and the first few chapters of Neverwhere before I couldn't suffer Gaiman's reading any longer.

OMG *scifigasm* I loved Diamond Age. If you haven't already, definitely get Snowcrash as well. It's probably the most visionary modern science fiction novel.

He hangs on words oddly. Lots of weird pauses. It's fine to listen to passively or to fall asleep to but I find it impossible to follow a narrative.

Question about audible. Am i paying for a license to listen to the audiobook, or do I now own it. I bought Atlas Shrugged (58 HOURS!!!!!) because I've been trying to find the time to read it but haven't yet. But I signed up to just use the trial and get the free book (I'm a poor college student) and I'm wondering if I'm going to be locked out when the trial runs out or I cancel.

You'll still have access while your subscription is inactive. And you can always re-download it. The files are DRM'd, but you won't lose access unless Audible goes tits-up at some point (which is highly unlikely!).

In short, you own the (admittedly DRM'd) files, with the ability to redownload them. BTW, have fun with Atlas Shrugged. Once you get past the hamfisted objectivism and that everyone is just shouting monologues at each other its actually pretty enjoyable.

If I didn't listen to so many podcasts, I'd definitely subscribe to Audible. It puts my local library's collection of audiobooks to shame.

I'd recommend the Holmes on the Range series by Steve Hockensmith. It's a fun mashup of old west, comedy, and mystery. There are three books out with at least two more on the way.

Actually, the Audible DRM isn't too bad as you can burn Audio CDs (though you can apparently only do that once). Before the enhanced format the cover art sucked though. The sound quality also varys a LOT. "Stranger in a Strange Land" e.g. is nearly unbearable. Always listen to the little preview bit before you spend your hard earned credits ;)

I will check out some Gaiman stuff (I love his style of reading, was already sucked in by a little preview bit on "This is Audible").

My favorite reader so far is, of course, Patrick Stewart. I got "A Christmas Carol" as my first audible book and he is so great in it. It's like Captain Picard is tucking you in at night and starts telling a wonderful ghost story. Then again, that might be kinda awkward.

I've been using Audible for three years now and mainly use to read as much as possible. I try to read an actual book in my free time, then listen to a book when I'm doing other things. I mostly listen to Non-Fiction, but I'm still looking for a good Fiction book to start. I'm ashamed to have only read one Neil Gaiman book. I just got done with Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell which is really interesting.

Other books I'll recommend:
Born Standing Up by Steve Martin
Snoop by Sam Gosling
The Places In Between by Rory Stewart
The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins
Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner
Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins

ALSO, TWiT.tv has a lot of good Audible picks. If you would like some good starting suggestions, check out the MacBreak Weekly picks. Andy Ihnatko always has good picks.
