Book Suggestions?

Postby robulus » Jun 15th, 2009 @ 11:49pm

I'm looking for some reading ideas of the non-comic variety...new series or stand alone. I'm kind of all over the place interest-wise, but I figure I'll stick to asking for sci-fi given the forum involved.

My last few sci-fi books have been:
McCarthy's The Road (this one kind of straddles genres, but I'll leave it)
Haldeman's Forever War
Scalzi's Old Man's War series
Some JG Ballard as I can find it

And I've gone through a lot of the classics:
Asimov and Clarke (even the Sunstorm series he did with Baxter before he died)
Hitchhiker and Dirk Gently
Dune (and the tolerable sequels)

There are way more, but I can't remember or list them all, so just have at it.

Based on your list, it seems my tastes run similar to yours, so I'll just suggest other things that I've read recently and liked. I'll stick primarily to SF, in keeping with the tone of your request.

Richard Morgan - Takeshi Kovacs Series - Start with: "Altered Carbon"

Neal Asher - Agent Cormac Series - First book in order of publication: "Gridlinked"

Neal Stephenson - "Snow Crash"

Alastair Reynolds - Revelation Space Series - Starts with "Revelation Space", also "Pushing Ice" (This is a stand-alone story I'm reading right now and enjoying.)

Charles Stross - "Singularity Sky," "Iron Sunrise," "Accelerando," "Glasshouse," also "The Atrocity Archives" and "The Jennifer Morgue" - these are an interesting take on an organization protecting the world from unknown horrors and otherworldly forces

China Mieville - "Perdido Street Station," "The Scar," "Iron Council" - part SF, part Fantasy, part Steampunk, but a world pretty much unlike any other you've read

Julian May - The Saga of the Pliocene Exile series - Starts with "The Many-Colored Land"

Jack Chalker - The Four Lords of the Diamond Series - 1st book: "Lilith: A Snake in the Grass"

Hope this helps. Happy reading!

If you have played through Mass Effect, I have to recommend both books that have been released. Revelation is about Captain Anderson's history and how he got started. Ascension is a side story about Kahlee Sanders trying to protect a young Biotic named Gillian and trying to keep her out of reach of the Illusive Man.

These books did a great job expanding on the Mass Effect universe and are must reads for Mass Effect fans.

If you want some more "hard" science fiction, about space exploration and such, look for one of Jack McDevitt's books. He's got an "Academy" series, which starts with Engines of God, but they are all pretty stand-alone. Or the Alex Benedict stories tend to have a little more shooty action, and of those I've read Polaris and Seeker, both very good, and you don't need to read them in order.

Haldeman's other books are also pretty good, especially his Worlds series, but I think those are pretty hard to find. His most recent is The Accidental Time Machine which I just read, and a good 3/4ths of it are really really good, but it gets into far future eventually and things just got too weird.

One last one, A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M. Miller Jr. One of my favorite post-apocalyptic books, about Earth starting 600 years after a nuclear apocalypse. There are three parts which take place hundreds of years apart, but each has an effect on the next. Cool ideas, and a very Fallout-esque atmosphere throughout.

I've said it in other boards like this and I'll say it again. Find the Amber chronicles by Roger Zelazny.
