A Geeky "How To" Demonstration for Class

Postby Naota_391 » Jul 1st, 2009 @ 7:20am

I'm in my summer speech class right now, and we're supposed to be giving a speech with a visual aid tomorrow in front of the entire class. It's supposed to be more of a "how to ____" kind of deal, and I'd like to do something relating to my nerdy tendencies that can still remain interesting to an entire class for about 5 minutes. Can't really think of anything cool, though. Any ideas?

[I know this probably isn't the best place to ask this, but this is the only website with a forum board I can access at school, and it seemed out of place in the other boards.]

Sounds like you're trying very hard to ostracize yourself from your peers. I recommend not following through.

I had to give the exact same presentation in high school. I ended up procrastinating until the actual class I was supposed to do it in and ended up going with "How to tie your shoes" including multiple methods (loop and swoop, bunny ears, etc). It got laughs from my peers and even the teacher, and didn't make me look like a big nerd, even though I spend most of that semester playing Pokemon in class, in plain sight of the teacher. I also got an A on the presentation.

The entire experience was kind of a microcosm for my entire 4 years of high school, and probably graduating with one of the lowest GPA's in the school's history, despite being smarter than most of the retards there.

You should totally give a presentation on how to surf the internet while in class without being caught. You can even show them this thread (that you posted the day before while in class) as an example. You can show them how to create a hot key or something to hide the window quickly if you sense trouble. Do it!

ahh the ole how to speach.
last time i did one was for a public speaking class in college

i ended up doing the speach about the finer points of a dragon punch.

i brought in my ps2 a controller, a fight stick, and copy of marvel vs capcom 2. i picked MvC2 mainly because it is really flashy and the execution is little bit more forgiving than the other capcom games

during the speech i taught my proffessor, and an older student in the class, how to execute the move, taught them the timing for use as an anti air, the spacing, and for the finally i had female student do a super. the prof. was in his mid 60's and the lady was in her fortys

In my University-level German class last year we were asked to present on a topic of our interest. And so I did a 10 minute presentation on "How to Play a Tank in World of Warcraft". I explained threat meters and aggro to the class, while pointing out boss abilities like de-aggros, threat tables and knock-backs which the Tank has to keep an eye out for.

I think LiQuid was exaggerating when he was taking about ostracizing yourself. It's not as tough people in your class will laugh, poke fun or think less of you. It's all in good humour, so go for it.

5-minutes isn't a long time. And considering I did a presentation in German (My 3rd language), which was twice the duration, I think you'll do fine.

Maybe something really simple like installing a hard drive or memory sticks on a computer. I think that could be real helpful for non tech savvy people, there is something about cracking open the computer case that really intimidates most people.

This way you get to fly your geek flag and help some people out.

Or go watch 'Scam School' and use one of Brian Brushwood's social engineering scams to impress the shit out of your class.

Thanks for doing that additional testing I appreciate it. It sounds like I need to give my iTach another try with learning.

I'll let you know how it goes.
