It's a free to play Diablo clone, it's suppose to be really good.

They are doing a stress test on the server this weekend so the beta is going to be open to everyone. It opens up 10 hours after I made this post and the public weekend ends at 11:59pm on Sunday (April 1), Pacific Daylight Time.

You can download the client in advance here but you do need to register first

Path of Exile is completely free to play - no upfront costs or monthly fees are required to enjoy 100% of the game content.
To fund the development and maintenance costs of the project, we plan to let players purchase aesthetic perks for their characters such as:
Additional character animations (for example, taunts or PvP victory animations)
Dyes and item skins
Alternate spell effects
Social pets
We will also offer some optional paid services such as:
Inter-realm/inter-account character transfers
Character renaming
You’ll notice nothing in the list above confers an actual gameplay advantage.
Randomly generated levels and items for extreme replayability
Path of Exile features randomly generated indoors and outdoors areas, a quality that ensures long term replayability. RPG fans we talked to expressed extreme disdain for having to replay identical game areas over and over, so we're confident we've made the right design choice. We know that hardcore online gamers play for extreme lengths of time, and we want to make their thousandth hour in Path of Exile as exciting as their first.
Our item system is also extremely diverse. Action RPG fans will be thrilled by the depth and nearly infinite customization of items.

Played about 20 mins of the Ranger. It's ok but it's no Titan Quest.

I am really enjoying this game. I like how it has the Final Fantasy 7 materia system and the Final Fantasy X sphere grid system.

After playing the game a bunch with ex, I have to say this was much better than I originally thought.

PROS
1-The combination of spell/skill gems that level up FF7 style with a passive sphere grid that lets you build your character's stats is a great idea. You can experiment with skill that would be for other classes as well.
2-The level progression in the game was also fast, which encouraged us to keep playing.
3-Dungeons are instanced while towns are not, kinda like Guild Wars. It keeps annoying players from ninja looting when you're exploring.
4-Small item management is gone; health and mana flasks regenerate as you kill enemies, you don't need ammunition for your weapons like arrows, you don't have to worry about durability.
5-Really nice looking game.
6-It's free to play but doesn't seem to limit you in any way from accessing content. Doesn't make you run through the same areas over and over.

CONS
1-They need to get some modern UI. Things like having to physically click and drag every item you want to sell to a sale window or having to physically rearrange your inventory piece by piece. Games like Titan Quest and Torchlight have these features so I'm disappointed they aren't present here.
2-Their economy system is not good. There is no gold in the game so you exchange items when you sell. The main item used for currency are scrolls of identification, which you end up using all the time on blue/gold tier items! And because inventory space is limited you have to constantly go back to town to sell you items and trade them for more scrolls. This coupled with con #1 makes for an INCREDIBLY LABORIOUS PROCESS.
3-The camera is very close and you can't rotate or zoom out. When you're inside a cave the isometric view will block your view behind walls.
4-There is no mini map and the auto map is straight out of DIABLO2 and is ugly.

So I have complaints but I enjoyed it. Too bad the public beta ended but I guess I'll reinstall Titan Quest instead.

Something I heard you guys say on the podcast that I wanted to point out that you just mentioned as a con. You don't have to click and drag to sell things in this game, just shift-click and the item instantly moves over.

That's good to know, I feel kind of stupid now.

Also your stash is shared between characters. So it's really easy to transfer stuff.

I thought the game was okay. It was a little rough around the edges but for a free to play game it was pretty good. Ex you should try Torchlight and see how it compares.

Anyone that doesn't want to wait for a random beta key can buy one
https://www.pathofexile.com/purchase

The cheapest option is $10 and it gets you a beta key and 100 points ($10 worth of points) to spend in their microtransaction store

Somehow paying for a beta key for a free to play game seems wrong.

Well it does have microtransactions and paying $10 for the key does get you $10 worth of PoE bucks. If you're already in the beta and want to buy stuff this gets you an extra key.

They're also going to be doing a kickstarter soon.

Path of Exile

Postby LindaReamn » Feb 17th, 2018 @ 2:54am

Is anyone playing Path of Exile? I think it is a pretty cool game. You guys should take a look at if you are into games like Diablo, Torchlight, and other hack n slash ARPGs. Plus what makes it even better is the game is FREE Now you can buy extra goodies to customize your character or buy extra space in your stash. Now this isnt a game that you can spend cash to get ahead which I like most about this game. This has been my go to game until I get by Xbox One this Christmas. Got my wife buying it for me. Just need to trade in my Xbox 360, PS3, and all my games and what not.Shoot me a message if any of guys are planning on playing this.
