Everquest isn't an MMO, it's the digital equivalent of being kicked in your nuts. MMOs have shit like fetch quests, and kill 10 of x monsters. Everquest has you literally sitting in place and killing the same monster as it respawns every 5 minutes to level up. Everquest is actually still probably the most fun you can have with other people over the internet. I just wonder what someone with no nostalgia for it would think about it now. Project 99 isn't an exact facsimile of what EQ was back in the day, but it's close enough. it uses a slightly more modern client so it has a more functional, customizable UI than the original EQ UI that had you playing the entire game thru a 300x300 pixel window on your screen.
All the gameplay is basically the same. The Velious expansion is (finally) coming to P99 next month too. It'll be the last expansion ever on the server because after that the game moved to the awful Luclin expansion and it's "improved" models (which are actually the ugliest fucking thing ever) and became too easy by letting every player warp around the world like they fucking deserved it. I've got a max level shaman on P99 and a handful of other characters around 50+ but I haven't been on there since around 2012-13 when my guild imploded and got absorbed into the "big" guilds. I do log on once or twice a year just to make sure it hasn't ceased to exist. It's awesome. I almost have as much nostalgia for my time on P99 as I do my initial time playing EQ in actual 1999.
