While I like the general dynamic being set up between Bruce and Damian, I think it’s weakened considerably by the father/son relationship that necessarily runs under every line and interaction they share. It makes Damian come off as a petulant child talking back to his father, rather than a brilliant and brash young independent hero with a (somewhat understandable) superiority complex. It lessens both of them as characters, and undercuts the schools of thought that Tomasi is setting them up as representing

All fair points that I agree with. Still not enough to make me deem this book as bad. That's Damien's character and Bruce is trying to be patient but still firm.
I can appreciate that their relationship is awkward and forced and will take time to develop but right now there’s little enjoyment in seeing them together. Damian feels even more bratty than normal (“Impossible,” you say? I wish.) and Bruce feels more touchy feel-y than normal. In the end, all you find yourself wishing for is the Dick Grayson/Damian Wayne dynamic that worked so beautifully (even when it was contentious) for the last year.

Agree with the Dick/Damien opinion, but also willing to let this new dynamic grow. We gave Dick over a year to grow into his role as Batman and earn Damien's respect. Do we really expect it to be smooth as silk now that Bruce is back?
I have to wonder if Damian would really be this disrespectful, going so far as to demand he be trusted and be considered a partner, not a sidekick.

He's the best trained and most experienced Robin to date, with an attitude and arrogance to match from his time with Ra's Al Ghul. Nothing unexpected here.
The problem with Batman & Robin is that we have a Batman that has stopped focusing upon his parent's death and a Robin that's unworthy, unlikeable, and unrealistic as a sidekick. This bad formula makes this title a bad start to what could have been a great series

 Really? We should just stick to the formula that worked before? Please. It's the fact that it's such a departure that makes it refreshing and fun to read.
Damian himself is portrayed as the most petulant individual to take on the guise of the Boy Wonder since Chris O'Donnell in Joel Schumacher's reviled Batman & Robin film. He argues with his mentor at every turn, ignores his advice, and gloats about how superior he is to his predecessors.

The character comes across as largely unlikable

Again, that's the point: DAMIEN IS A LITTLE BASTARD. And that's what makes him so awesome. Heroes should always be likeable? Then why are Wolverine and Deadshot such poor personalities, yet the most popular heroes?

Those popular heroes are roguish. There's a canyon of a gap between roguish and just being an unlikable jerk.

I was never trying to say the comic was just flat out bad, just that the dynamic sucked and it left a bad first impression. Most of those reviews were still in the 3/5, C, average range too. It's my least favorite Bat-book so far.

You could say that about Wolverine, but Deadpool is a straight up dick.

That's all fair. But in the interest of full disclosure, you don't like Damien to begin with and didn't follow his career from the get-go. Nothing you said or quoted was untrue, we just have different perspectives on the character and the dynamic.

Deadpool's a dick, but he makes jokes while being a dick, so he's likable. Like me!

If you say so.

Make a day trip to Chicago so we can play D & D at Galloping Ghost sometime.

Issue #2 has a goofy cover, but the content is stellar.

Bruce feels the full burden of guiding Damien in light, while NoBody reveals himself and his agenda.

Great splash pages from Gleason, especially the triple panel in the middle.

Eager to see where the confrontation leads.

I was particularly taken with the couple of panels in which Damien kills a bat and Alfred pokes his head out of the shadows. I think Damien's struggle with his psychopathic tendencies could make for interesting reading for the future issues.

Agreed. I thought they had resolved those issues when he was with Dick and the Teen Titans, but apparently not. Hopefully it will bring some great stories as you said.

Anyone read #3? After the first two I was wondering if this book was one that I might drop from my pull list but all the dickish/psychotic problems with Damien are now starting to come alive in the story. Deff. looking forward to #4!

I did, of course. Yeah, the story's really picking up now that NoBody has targeted Damien and Bruce. I have confidence in Tomasi and Gleason will keep this book on track.

NoBody's full identity and agenda is revealed, as Bruce continues to redeem Damien while surviving the deathtrap they find themselves in.

Another solid issue from Tomasi & Gleason.
