The "WTF, DC?!" thread!

Postby LiQuid » Feb 7th, 2013 @ 9:44pm

Not limited to the "WTF Month" of covers coming up. DC has been making some absolutely bone headed moves since the New 52 reboot, so even though I'm about a year late, this will be the new catalog of all of worst DC has to offer.

Up next are two of the new replacement books for this latest round of cancellations:

DC Comics Reveals Two New Politically-Charged Books

DC Comics has been on the cutting edge of trying bold, new things for that last few years and this announcement is no exception. With these two brand new titles, DC Comics is taking the themes and issues that came to the surface with the Occupy Wall Street movement and are bringing both sides of the coin into the world of superheroes.

I don't even have words for this.

Maybe they should have teamed up with Image or an even smaller publisher, DC bringing out the 1% book and some small press "The Movement." Seriously, though, the creative teams sound interesting, no idea what this is about (Bruce Wayne vs. Clark Kent?), but as ridiculously money-grabby as it might seem, I may be persuaded to look into it.

The WTF thing reminds me of the white covers they did a while back but much more in-your-face this time -- and now obviously part of each story as well. I don't mind branding everything a certain way or big crossovers but it seems really forced to have each book promise something that's supposedly shocking, yet they aren't connected in any meaningful way as far as I can tell.

I'm just wondering if this is "You know, I've said everything I can about this character, I think I'm done." or "You know, this New 52 thing is kind of limiting what I want to say, so fuck it, I'm out."

Regardless, you're only going to hear the former.

To be fair, he was already stretched pretty thin between GL, JL and Aquamang. He was so diluted it was making him totally inconsistent. GL hasn't been exciting since the N52 started. Justice League has been straight up bad most of the time. It's kind of a wonder Aquaman has been good so consistently given the rest of his stuff has been floundering.

So yeah, I think some shakeup was needed for him creatively, but he also could have just gotten sick of DC forcing crossovers on shit. I'm starting to wonder how much say he had in this Third Army bullshit. It doesn't really feel like he's wanted to play along with it at all.

Woah I didn't even realize Johns and Lemire were going to be "co-writing" Justice League. So Johns is basically just on Aquaman? This could be great for Aquaman if DC lets him franchise that shit up like he did for Green Lantern, but does DC have enough faith in the character?

I wish I could say this bothers me more but it doesn't. Reading all the old GL stuff, GL Corp has been a consistently more entertaining and imaginative book versus vanilla GL. IF they can get that guy to take over/oversee the GL franchise then I'm pretty pumped for this move.

The more I think about it, the more I think this has to do with Johns focusing on the Justice League. JL has been shit, and he should be able to fix it up without GL as a distraction. He even basically said as much in an open letter to fans. But why now? Seems pretty obvious to me. Justice League Movie. That has to be it. He's gotta be getting shit ready for that.

Andy Diggle (I don't know who this is) is walking off of Action Comics for "professional reasons". Josh Fialkov is leaving GLC and Red Lanterns because, "There were editorial decisions about the direction of the book that conflicted with the story I was hired to tell..." He's leaving for Marvel.

Wut is happening at DC.

How much longer until /wrist time for you Higgins? How many more times does this have to happen? I'm legitimately kind of shocked about Fialkov. That dude is getting it up the ass hard from DC. He needs to jump ship and tell a great story at Marvel or on an indie book.

He left the book because DC is going to kill off John Stewart. I have no words.
