So, Richard received eternal life as a 'gift' because of Jacob, but Richard sees it as more of a curse. And he touched pretty much every important character before coming to the island, everyone must have a 'gift' of their own, and it doesn't necessarily have to be eternal life. Hurley's and Miles's could be their ability to talk with the dead (which have proven invaluable to their plans so far). A number of people have demonstrated that they're unkillable under most situations, especially if death is coming at them from their own hands. Are there any other examples? I'm thinkin' that everyone starts manifesting secret powers in the not so near future...

Has Richard's name been seen on any of the lists? I can't remember, but I'm interested in why Jacob is touching and "gifting" people who aren't candidates like Kate and possibly Richard.

Also, going back to last season's finale, this could explain why Juliet had a flashback without Jacob touching her. Everyone else got touched and now can't successfully commit suicide, but she wasn't touched so when she blew up the bomb she could die. There's got to be something more with her, though, since she somehow apparently knows that the sideways reality exists.

We only saw a flashback of Jacob touching Hurley before he came to the island the second time because he gave Hurley the suitcase on that occasion and they wanted to integrate that into the show. But just because we were shown that scene, it doesn't mean that Hurley wasn't touched at some earlier point in his life. Just because Kate and Richard weren't given numbers that we saw, doesn't mean that their names weren't on the rock but crossed out either.

Kate might've been a candidate when Jacob touched her. Her stepfather's last name, Austen, is not crossed out in the Lighthouse. It's not shown in the Cave, but according to that website I linked, "It has been confirmed by Carlton Cuse that Kate's name was on the cave wall, but regrettably did not make the final edit. He also confirmed her name was crossed out on the cave wall."

I wanted to say the same, but then remembered I kinda not hate Kate too, so yeah.

Sawyer also remains the only character touched by Jacob before the atom bomb wiped a part of history. All other characters were touched in a time-line the atom bomb wiped from history.

Do you say this because he was touched when he was younger? Kate was also touched when she was younger, when she tried to steal a Lunchbox from a store.

I think Klendathu is right about Sawyer, because Sawyer was 8 when he met Jacob and that would make it 1976 when Jacob touched him, a whole year before the bomb went off. Also Kate was touched after the bomb went off because she was born in 1977 and she was touched when she was 10. So that would make Sawyer the only character who could have possibly been touched by Jacob in the Alternate time line
