What is Burn Notice?

Postby LarryZ » Feb 7th, 2010 @ 12:07pm

The only time I ever hear anything about the show is on the podcast. I'm not the only one though, as SNL had a segment on the popularity of the show:

http://www.hulu.com/watch/126486/saturd ... -game-show

It made me laugh, though if I was a regular viewer of the show I'd probably be angry at the dismissal of the show from non-viewers.

I actually know what Burn Notice is (though I don't watch it). The subject header was the title of the game show sketch from SNL last night.

SNL has been painfully unfunny for about 20 years now. This does not buck the trend.

Oh relax. It was a pretty funny skit. SNL is more off than on, true, but it's no MadTV.

Not only was it unfunny, I don't even understand it. Are they saying...it's a highly-rated show, but no one actually watched it, and no one knows what it is? That's about the only thing I could get out of it, and I assume I'm wrong, because that's not funny.

The joke is that it's a popular show but 99.9% of mainstream America doesn't have a fucking clue what it is because it's on a network that (until recently) is completely unknown for quality original programming.

It's not exactly "haha" funny, but I think it's clever. I pretty much thought the same thing as soon as I first started listening to you guys yammering about it on the 'cast every week.

Oh, and your 20 years, which probably a mix of hyperbole and estimation, is a little ridiculous. SNL was pretty funny into the mid/late 90's and while it suffered a cataclysmic dip in quality for about a decade there, and is still generally unwatchable for an entire episodes run time, they do have a few gems on their staff. The Lonely Island crew (which consists most notably of Andy Samberg, but Akiva and Jorma work on the writing staff) as well a few misfits in the cast like Bill Heder, Will Forte and Kristin Wiig have added some talent to the show.

I'm not exaggerating though when I say that I wish that a meteor would fall from space and kill Keenan Thompson. I know talented black comedians to round out their ethnically diverse cast are few and far between but for fuck's sake that man has never uttered a humorous line in his entire career, and yes I did grow up watching him in All That.

Not to mention the last 20 years of SNL have given us:

Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, David Spade, Robert Smigel, Norm Macdonald, Chris Rock, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Tracy Morgan, Maya Rudolph and yes, the Lonely Island crew.

SNL has had some phenomenal casts over the last 20 years, just also some very mediocre seasons.

Regardless, the point of the skit was that most people in America have no idea what Burn Notice is. I love the show, but I got into it because I am a huge Bruce Campbell nerd. Nearly everyone in my peer group has never even heard of the show. And yet, it's very very high in the ratings. This seeming contradiction is called irony, and as such it is funny.

I admit that before this podcast I didn't know what Burn Notice was about, and commercials like the one in that skit (although that was probably not a real commercial, at least not all of one) are part of the reason why. Sure I could have googled it, but it wasn't a pressing matter until I started listening to the podcast.

The good news is, I bought seasons 1 and 2 on dvd right before the east coast snowpocalypse and between those, downloading, and hulu have caught up on the whole thing. I like it!

It was a statistics gag.

Even the highest rated show in the US is only watched, numerically, by a small amount of people relative to the size of the population. Add to that the fact that the show has an enigmatic premise and title and it becomes logical that making a joke about it's obscurity will be relatable for a significant portion of the viewers.

Also, SNL recently tends to base most of it's 'humour' off poking fun at other shows/movies/people. Without commenting on the quality, the quantity of this sort of sketch has got to the point where I don't know why I even watch anymore, I should just dig up re-runs of old shows when they used to write original comedy, as opposed to just making fun of everything and hoping people hate at least one thing they parody.

PS Burn notice is an awesome show.
