Moviebox: 6/22-6/29: ''Brick''

Hey folks, it seems to be my turn and I haven't been on much but I guess this will do.
The movie is called 'Brick' and is about this guy in school who also is a detective. It's Rian Johnson first movie and made on a budget of $500.000 in 2005. The main dude is played by this Joseph Gordon-Levitt guy and he's going to star in some other small indie film called Inception.

Anyway I hope you will enjoy it, it's one of my favourites and it's a must see if you ask me.

Synopsis:
Spoiler: show
The life of Brendan Frye is about to change when his hot ex-girlfriend Emily disappears overnight. When Brendan finds out that Emily's disappearence may be connected to a local urban legend called "The Pin," he tactfully infiltrates the hierarchy of high-school caste. With the help of a good friend named Brain, Brendan proceeds into the pit and begins to stir up controversy with the school's most popular stock in order to figure out just what the hell is going on. En route, he begins to realize that this is no ordinary group of people that Emily had familiarized herself with. They are dangerous and willing to do anything to protect their political strength and reputations at any cost. And when drugs finally become a catalyst of brutal peer violence, Brendan is now caught not only looking out for the safety of his lover, but for his own life as well. There's more, but you'll have to watch.

Good flick. Dialog is over the top silly. It's like Max Payne played by a bunch of teenagers.

I hated this movie more than you can imagine. The dialogue absolutely killed me. I couldn't take it seriously.

This one took me several tries to get through it for the same reasons. I initially found it super pretentious and so self aware of it's obvious quirkiness that it became annoying. Eventually I got stoned and suspended my disbelief and actually enjoyed it. Looking back on it, this is a pretty clever movie.

I liked the film noir feel to the movie juxtaposed against the high school setting.

She is also in Remember Me. Not a good enough reason to watch that movie.

If memory serves, that was a pretty descent remake. Didn't it have a screw driver stabbing in it?

Way to pick a film everyone has seen James! :D

But yeah those voice overs only sounded cool if you ask me so this movie was bloody amazing. That case seen with the shoes is still one of my favourite scenes, even though it's a bit far fetched..

One of my favourite movies. I enjoy the performances and Rian Johnson's style. The premise is fascinating and the emotions are intense. Thanks for stealing my pick, douchebag.

I felt more interested in the beginning, before I knew what all was going on. Towards the end, I just kinda zoned out. I would recommend it to others, though.

I loved the mystery, and taking place in a highschool is just silly. I really don't have much more to say on it.

Man, I thought this movie was awesome! The acting by the kid from 3rd Rock From The Sun was fantastic. Being a "smart guy" at my school, I could relate to his character somewhat...although I was way to shy and self-conscious to even dream of being a bad ass like this guy. I thought the plot was great and I love how all the little things in the movie were interrelated and all a part of the big picture. It sort of reminded me of an Ocean's movie in that respect. Now, I admit, the dialogue is way over the top. I kind of wish everyone talked like that, but no one does...especially highschool students, so it really detracted from the movies believability (is that a real word?).

Overall this is one of my favourite MovieBox selections so far. Doc Strangelove is still firmly in first place, but Brick is definitely a solid second...let's see if Equilibrium can do any better. :D

Just finished watching it and it was a pretty fun flick. The noir dialog was definitely over the top, but it worked within the world of the film. It was pretty interesting to contrast the noir-detective style with a high school setting. In a way, it reminded me of certain episodes of South Park where they have kids (albeit much younger ones) in situations meant for adults, complete with moments where the audience is reminded that the kids are in fact still kids. I loved the way the story came together in the end. There was a time during Brendan's final speech that made me think of the "You're so fucked" moment in Michael Clayton.

I kept trying to figure out where I had seen the one girl before, and as I look it up now I see she was in Heroes. Remember that show, on NBC, about the people with ablities? I can't believe it only had two seasons, it was so promising.

Ohh, I didn't know these threads exist. I'll have to keep my eyes on it. Awesome movie guys! I just bought it a few months ago after watching it on Netflix. It's my current "You haven't seen this? We're watching it NOW" movie.

Edit: Holy crap, the last two were Equilibrium and Trick R Treat. I like your style...

Equilibrium is the next one. These get posted early to give people time to get the movie.

If you want to participate in picking the movies you can get added to the list, you'll get to pick in a couple months.

I'm guessing most of the geekbox listeners don't know moviebox exists, it would help if they'd mention it on the podcast from time to time.

They mentioned it in the last episode, which brought me here to check it out. Higgins mentioned Brick, and how he had watched because of a post in the forums.
