Didn't realize this was starting so soon. Just when I was running out of shit to watch too. I swore I would finish listening to the first book before it came out but now I won't have the time. :(

Should I delete thread and repost it or should I just let Higgins move it?

Let Higgins move it. I feel bad we haven't given him anything to moderate lately.

Can't delete your threads after someone replies it turns out so Higgins has something to do.

I will definitely be watching this. Especially since we picked up HBO just for this series.

I have never heard tell of Game of Thrones before, but judging by LiQuid's comment I'm guessing it's a book that's being turned into a TV series? If so, how was the book? The previews of the show look bad ass.

The books are by George R R Martin and are AWESOME. Easily my second favorite series behind Name of the Wind. If you enjoy fantasy then you should read them. I must warn you that he takes about 2-6 years between books so if the new one this summer doesn't end the series, it will be a long wait until the next one.

I see nothing wrong with this show format

I'm just tired of fantasy shows in general.

The thing with the books (and I'll assume the TV show as well) is that it's not high fantasy. That is to say, after that little bit in the beginning this should seem like a historical fiction (with made up countries and houses). It's all politics and drama.

@tnitnetny: I doubt A Dance with Dragons will be the last, as it was originally suppose to be part of A Feast for Crows and as far as I know takes place during the same time as that book. We just get to see different characters in A Dance with Dragons. (Also, Wikipedia has two more books slated as Forthcoming)

About the newest book:
Spoiler: show
The newest book should show a bit more of the mystical since it's going to primarily be about characters who have gone to the other side of the wall. And I assume that side of the wall still has some of the "old" magic stuff going on, e.g. the Others.

I'll be watching. Certainly looks better than the BBC's Merlin...

I actually do want to see this. I don't have HBO though so hopefully I find some way to check it out since Netflix and HBO hate each other.

I wonder if the dead bodies being laid out in the shape of the letter Phi has any significance.

I don't remember them being arranged in a specific way in the books, so if there is, it's new to the TV show.

HBO had a replica of the throne at WonderCon.

They shot attendee's photos free of charge. (Well almost "free". They collected one's email, Twitter, or Facebook info.) Once the photo was taken, guests could grab an iPad, locate their photo, then electronically send it to themselves.

I'm actually not even a huge fan of the book so far, which is why I've been so hesitant to keep listening to it. I understand why a lot of people do though. Lot of convoluted, interpersonal relationships, feuding kingdoms and political intrigue with lots of action too. I just don't like how dry and deep it is. GRRM is almost as in love with his characters and their motivations as JRRT was with his scenery and it makes for kind of a trying read (or listen, in my case). After a couple chapters I found myself jumping to a wiki to try and help navigate the droves of characters being thrown at me. Again, I can see how people are really into it, I just grew up on much lighter fare.

I personally think it's going to make for a rather boring TV show unless they trim a lot of fat, but regardless, there hasn't been a fantasy series of this magnitude in pretty much ever, so I'm gonna be tuning in and hoping for the best.

Yeah this looks like it has LOTR scale.

It's not on the same scale as this but you should watch Camelot if you want another good fantasy series.

My mother and father love Merlin! They never miss an episode. I have watched a few episodes with them and they weren't horrible...more comical than anything.

I don't watch Starz shows. Too low rent.

It's not a green screen show like Spartacus if thats what you're talking about.

Doesn't matter what color the screen is, it'll still be hell of ghetto. I'm actually gonna start watching Spartacus pretty soon though, so I'm just grandstanding and chest thumping.

I'm super excited for this show. The books are fantastic. I just wish he wouldn't take so long in between books. He is getting pretty old and I'm afraid he won't be along long enough to finish the series.
