Whatcha been watching?

Postby LiQuid » Jul 20th, 2011 @ 11:05am

Watch a movie or show but don't feel like starting a new thread or necro'ing an ancient one? Mention it here.

Yesterday I re-watched Escape from New York and LA. New York was measured, atmospheric, and had a black man driving a Cadillac with chandeliers on the hood. LA was a fucking miracle, with Snake shooting hoops, surfing (!!!) and capping fools from the harness of a hang glider. I have no clue how LA gets panned.

After that I re-watched The Warriors. That movie has no business even existing but holy christ on a cross is it amazing.

I watched Insidious.

My friends hyped the hell out of this movie for me, and it ended up being just barely above average. It wasn't anywhere near as awesome as I had anticipated. PG-13 horror hardly ever works.

I'm not watching Harry Potter, and that's a fact that's been pissing me off more and more with each passing day.

Since I ran out of Justified to watch I started a new attempt to watch season 3 of Sons of Anarchy and that show continues to be one of the biggest pieces of shit I've ever watched. I finally made it through the first episode and the drive by was pretty cool, but the second episode nearly put me to bed. I might trooper on and finish it just to say I did, but god is it a fucking chore. The first season of Sons was so damn good and Henry Rollins almost made season 2 acceptable, but the rape and the baby kidnapping have turned that show into a really shitty soap opera and I hate the fuck out of it now.

So I'm basically looking for a new, sick, action show to watch. My two immediate contenders are 24 and The Shield. Never saw a single episode of either, but the commercials for 24 always looked hilariously retarded and I hear The Shield is raw as fuck. Anybody got any inclination towards either?

Sons of Anarchy is the worst show ever. Are there objectively worse shows to have graced television screens? Probably. But SoA is heinous simply because it started out so well and with such strong direction, and then royally shit all over the place from season 2 onward. Season 1 had a great narrative, with a painstakingly authentic setting and was a pretty clever take on an old tale. But season 2 and onwards reads like, "well shit, we actually have a hit on our hands, but we don't know where the fuck to go with it now" like they hadn't thought that bit out at all for even a second. The additional insult added to injury was the fact that the setting for the show was essentially my hometown, so season 2 and onward was like FX taking a shit in my backyard.

The Scorpion King is so fucking amazing. Easily the best thing to come of The Mummy franchise aside from pygmy spearchuckers and yeti medics.

Between those two, I'd go with The Shield. 24 was a cool idea at the time, and I think the first season was really good (mainly because it was new), but after that, it was just the same shit over and over and over again.

I have taken your advice to heart. I was leaning in that direction anyways. 24 does seem like the kind of show that would have leaned on a gimmick.

The worst part was that future seasons didn't even bother adhering to the gimmick. It just seemed like the time was a way to tie each episode together, and Jack became something of a superhuman.

Whereas, in season 1 it would take people half an episode to drive from place to place, and Jack would occasionally need sleep.

Maybe it's worth it to just watch the first season then? When does Elisha Cuthbert show up cause she's fucking hot.

I'm worried that The Shield might not have any hot chicks.

I'm open to other suggestions too, by the way. Those 2 were just off the cuff options I was thinking about.

The first season of 24 is worth checking out, but only that one. Elisha Cuthbert around the whole time; she plays Jack Bauer's (Kiefer Sutherland's) daughter Kim. However, she serves no real purpose other than to get in perilous situations to make Jack Bauer's day that much more complicated. There's a ridiculous storyline from Season 2 that involves Kim and a cougar (not a sexy older lady looking for a younger partner; an actual cougar) that's pretty much the dumbest storyline in the history of television. But in Season 1, her character hadn't gotten annoying yet, so her human-plot-device character was more tolerable.

So yeah, watch Season 1 of 24, but stop after that. The Shield is a much better show (even if it does have a relative lack of hot chicks). Although, given LiQuid's love of shitty superhero movies like X3 and Wolverine, he might actually enjoy the later season's of 24. Those seasons get to such a ludicrous level of absurdity (at one point in Season 6 or 7, Jack uses a taser... on a phone) that they could be right in his wheelhouse.

Oh I know. Even though there's so many running gags, it's very easy to get into them and realize why they're funny.
I didn't realize the show creator was a writer on family guy while it was still decent (pre-cancellation). It's also interesting that even with how progressive and geeky it is, it's disney channel's most successful show ever

I'm halfway through Torchwood season 3 (taking Konanda's suggestion and skipping all of season 1&2) and it's interesting but kind of slow so far. So far, it's like a cheap, retarded version of Lost. Mostly, I just want to get this over with so I can watch the new version on Starz. Also, I hate this version of Captain Jack - he was so much more of a fun character in Doctor Who. Now he's halfway serious and it's kinda weird.

Ya season 3 is more serious than 1&2. There is some good stuff in 1&2 but for the most part it's really cheesy in a not so intentional way. It was basically how can we make Doctor Who edgy? And some dude's like sex & violence and they rolled with it. Some of the more ridiculous episodes being a violent monster that feeds on sexual energy.
Get outta here, Thunder Tits!

I'm almost done with Season 3 of Torchwood (I fell asleep during the middle of the last epiosde). Things are finally beginning to pick up. They really could have condensed these five episodes into a two part season finale or something. I'm also noting a glaring omission of The Doctor. It's kind of cool though at the beginning of episode 5 where gap-tooth chick was like, "Sometimes I ask myself where Captain Jack's fabled Doctor is during all these crises, but now I understand that sometimes he must look at humanity and turn away in shame." Does The Doctor make any appearances during the first two seasons? If so, I will download those and only those episodes to watch.

Also, I'm thoroughly annoyed by season 3 so far. Nobody has remotely even attempted to find a real solution to combating this alien menace so far. And while analyzing the social and political ramifications of their arrival is fascinating and all, someone needs to get to fucking business ASAP. At this point, I'd be perfectly happy with The Doctor swooping in like a giant Deux Ex Machina device to save the day, even though I know that isn't going to happen - because at least that will offer some progress in the progression of the plot-conflict.

OK - finished Children of Men. That ending was retarded. Mostly because it's predicated on the assumption that you're going to give a shit about a bunch of stupid kids. I don't though. And while I can empathize with the plight of the main characters, the fundamental underlying narrative of those five episodes seem to be the usual RTD shameless emotional hostage-taking. Except unlike in Doctor Who where I actually gave a crap about the characters he was fucking with, I really don't care about any of these folks from Torchwood.

Also, they're really playing up the angle of Captain Jack being a The Doctor stand-in, except immature and not as bright. The ending of Children of Men is kind of dumb because it would have taken the Doctor 30 seconds to figure all of that nonsense out. Except the challenge wouldn't have been to figure out how to defeat them, it would have been how to defeat them without any kids dying.

Watched John Carpenter's Vampires, which I guess is just Vampires now. It was better than I remember it being when I last saw it in high school, but it still wasn't his best stuff. The first half hour or so was amazing but then it got kinda heavy in the middle.

Also: Behind Enemy Lines: Colombia. The second(?!) direct-to-video sequel to the 2001 Gene Hackman/Owen Wilson (non-)classic. I figured it being a WWE Studios production it would be semi-competent and have some decent cheese factor like most of their back catalog. Unfortunately it was just really boring. A knockout performance from WWE's own Mr. Kennedy and/or TNA's own Mr. Anderson, some good practical effects (OMG a real car blowing up! Won't see that in a Bay film), so-so gunfights, and a bunch of sneak attack stabbings highlighted a totally throwaway plot. It also had the wolf man dude from True Blood.
