Well, they never specified in the orignial movie that the people who stole the Death Star plans were Bothans, so it's not like they're contradicting anything here. In fact, they're not mentioned at all; the Rebellion just has the stolen plans from the jump. They have a blank slate when it comes to these characters.

Regardless, this would have been the perfect opportunity to make a wacky Star Wars martian the main character in an otherwise live action movie. Can you imagine how rad that would be? Sick of all these space British people! Give me a weird monkey man!

Read this:

It's a standalone retelling of his origin story. Emma Rios is one of my favorite artists.

Not a movie trailer but a TV show trailer.

Might watch just for Bill Paxton

Man, I love The Pax so much but this seems like a pretty severe miscast.

Also why THE FUCK is that on CBS. I've been waiting for a show like this since I finished The Shield, but this actually looks terrible.

OH, it's Jerry Bruckheimer.

Well that's going to be a disaster.

The jumpsuit looks ridiculous, but other than that, it looks pretty cool.

Not only does this GitS movie look like utter garbage, but it completely misses the mark on what GitS and Matoko as a character is. By like, wiiiiide margins.

Looks good (bad). Will watch. Can only succeed if it truly misses the mark of the anime.

I dunno. They seem to have a pretty high regard for the original.

Congrats, you've got a shallow remake that scrapes the surface of what GitS looks like, and totally misses the point underneath. The 'secret origin story' angle they're going for is fucking stupid and completely misses the point of Matoko - of whom the film strips her entire identity, since she's now simply 'The Major' with a past hidden to her. The Major isn't supposed to question her personal identity, she's very sure of who exactly who she is. She merely questions whether she's still technically human anymore. And there's a BIG difference between the two that this film, from these early looks, doesn't seem to understand.

Also, hurray for muh exotic orentialism.

True, there was never any secret mystery about her origins before. At least, not to the audience anyway. In SAC, she doesn't even remember what her real name was before her plane crash.

I'm not entirely sure that that lack of a mystery is actually "the point of Matoko" though.

I find it a little despicable how Nihon eiga has yellowwashed Ed. There are plenty of young white adult men that could have easily been given the role of a clearly WHITE character instead of casting a Japanese person in the role. When will Japanese filmmakers learn to respect the source material? They could be using this film to help provide opportunities for White actors in a market with few opportunities for them to shine.
