This is what Karen Traviss Did with her awesome series of books:

Thematically, her work within the Star Wars universe has frequently centered on Mandalorians and their culture. In particular, her Republic Commando novels have explored themes of identity with regards to clone troopers, their Mandalorian heritage, and their interaction with Jedi leadership. Traviss has since parted from Del Rey for creative differences.

In the end "fans" raged about how the Jedi did not match the overpowered ideal that their minds eyes came up with.

I want either a trilogy based on Legacy (far in the future with brand new characters) or just a Rogue Squadron movie.

Ok, no more Skywalker Jedi. I don't want to see old Luke or ghost Anakin. Make it a prequel to the prequels and have it be a Yoda movie. I'd watch a Yoda movie.

Jedi are pretty much the only unique interesting thing about the Star Wars universe. They've just been handled pretty terribly in the movies. And nobody fucking wants to see a Yoda movie.

You know what happened the last time they took a popular character with a mysterious past and tried to tell his backstory?

Fans are the worst. Fans need to stop jerking each other off and demanding that their wet dreams come true. Any time someone puts something to film that you've imagined, it'll never live up to that imagination of yours. Let creative people be creative and give you something that maybe you never even thought of and it'll be awesome because it's brand new and you weren't expecting it. That's why you assholes grew to like Star Wars to begin with - it was brand new and not desperately mining your nostalgia.

So, JJ Abrams was apparently approached to direct the new Star Wars movie, and he turned it down. I'm honestly kinda shocked. I would have pegged him for wanting to be in it at any costs. He cites his pre-existing involvement in Star Trek and how big of a fan he is of Star Wars as conflicting interests, which would be a very reasonable, responsible, and noble reason to not get involved. I think that's probably just the diplomatic answer, and there's probably other reasons as well. It could be an ego thing, or he doesn't want Disney to hamstring his production/look over his shoulder constantly/force him to make a kids movie (which Disney is notorious for doing). But still, very surprising move. And kudos to Disney for being smart enough to be on top of that shit like they should be. Abrams (if he was willing) was totally the #1 guy they should have had to make the movies. What they should do, is get someone super big into Star Trek to make the new Star Wars movies, so that Trek is the new Wars, and Wars is the new Trek, and the whole world is fucked up and doesn’t make sense.

He's already a Disney-stooge and his movies/tv shows already focus heavily on 'witty' one-liners over telling an interesting and involved story, sacrificing any orignality in the process. It would be a perfect fit!

Neill Blomkamp would be cool. D9 had the "lived in" feel that the original Star Wars trilogy did but that the prequels totally lacked. Duncan Jones is way too fucking heady for Star Wars.

I doubt he'd do it since he previously turned down the opportunity to direct Return of the Jedi saying that it was Lucas's thing and he probably wouldn't have creative license. Instead he made Dune. Good job, Dave. Good job.
