Disclaimer: Everything I say here assumes that Abrams & company are paying at least a little attention to Trek continuity. If they're not, then nothing I say here matters. (Okay, nothing I say here matters anyway, but that's true for all of us, right? ;) )

One thing people keep forgetting is that the 2009 Trek film takes place 10 years before the original series occurred: Kirk is about 25 (maybe younger), whereas he's 35 in the series. That means that unless Into Darkness leaps ahead 10 years (which, of course, it might, but that would be weird), almost nothing from the original series should be showing up in this film, because it's way too early. By that token, Kirk should be having the adventures that Chris Pike had in the original timeline (Talos IV, anyone?).

(This is why the IDW comic book series doesn't make much sense, since it's retelling original series stories in the new timeline, but 10 years too early.)

Granted, there are some differences, and there can be more (there's no reason the Enterprise can't find the Botany Bay 10 years early, for example, especially since this Enterprise is considerably more advanced than the original series one), but the exact confluence of events which led to, say, Gary Mitchell and Elizabeth Dehner being on the Enterprise when it attempted to pierce the galactic barrier in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" doesn't exist in this timeline. Heck, most of the crewmembers from the original series probably haven't even started the Academy yet.

By the way, I am delighted that Bruce Greenwood will be returning as Christopher Pike. I thought he was the best thing in the original film (despite his limited screen time), and I'd watch a whole Trek series based around him.

Spoiler: show
To be fair a major super-power just had their entire planet destroyed, events might start happening at a different pace now.

Not just a different pace, but just completely different all together. The '09 Trek basically said "fuck you" to every single ounce of continuity/lore/history within Star Trek. Trying to estimate anything based on the continuity of the old show is pointless, because the writers just don't give a fuck. Their stupid time travel paradox has so far been their catch-all answer to why things are different for no reason (other than to make things look more exciting). Enterprise is inexplicably listed as 3x the size of the original? The script writer makes a vage, 100% bullshit answer that scans of future-Romulan tech gave Starfleet a leg-up on tech development. When you blow up a core planet of the Federation, pretty much anything is on the table. And the more I see of this, the more it wreaks of blatant and sickening nostalgia-mining (just like the '09 film was) and specifically, mining The Wrath of Khan. But of course, I'll go watch it on opening night because I'm a gigantic nerd, and us nerds are fucking awful people.

No, I saw it 24fps 2D. It wasn't the 8 minutes preview, it was just a new trailer and it was awesome.

Nothing important happens in those 10 minutes that even begins to betray the workings of the plot. It's just a disposable action sequence that reintroduces the characters and their jobs on the ship, as well as HEAVILY references Star Trek II once again.

The 9-minute Star Trek intro. is still up at this site, though I'm not sure I'd be willing to click the link on a computer that isn't an Ad-block+ equipped Mac, or a PC that's armed to the teeth against malware.

It's pretty much just like the last ten minutes of an average episode of Star Trek, just with a bigger budget. No spoilers really.

The clip is fine on it's own, meaning it's entertaining and it seems like a fun movie... BUT! As a nerd there's a lot of frown upon in this vid.

Spoiler: show
The fact that they role their eyes at Spock for citing the Prime Directive is soooo wrong. They just don't give a fuck about Star Trek lore until the point that they're making fun of it. The Prime Directive is cereal business and only in the very worst episodes would they not take it serious. Sure, there are times were they have to bend it or break it because within the context of episode it may become necessary, but in that clip they just break it willy-nilly for the lolz. And it ain't even that lol-worthy.

This is an interview with JJ Abrams about the new movie. I haven't read it all yet, but there's some interesting, insightful, reassuring, and worrisome things he has to say. The bit that stood out to me the most and that I especially don't like is how he's very purposefully making things Earth-centric and "grounded" – which is a notion that runs completely counter to a franchise that sums up its entire existence and purpose in the most iconic line in TV history - "To boldly go where no man has gone before." This man very clearly doesn't understand Star Trek.

New fan speculations based on previews of the tie-in comic. The 'real' identity of the movie's bad guy is:

TAS reference in the house. This is also ridiculously retarded, if it ends up being true as well.
