Inglorious Basterds

Postby Klendathu » Aug 23rd, 2009 @ 7:46am

all I can really say is go see it. This movie takes suspense, laughter and shock and really pulls it off to go from one to the other within seconds. Shock dissolves into laughter, laughter into shock and all other combinations possible. The weird thing about it though, is the fact that although the movie details how a group of Jewish soldiers and young female Jew fight the Nazis independently, the conflict is more reminiscent of the recent Iraq war, its factions and how they conduct operations (Body of Lies and Hurt Locker come to mind). That might also be a reason why the Nazis do not come off very Nazi like many times, although the character Hans Landa takes the cake as most devious person in a movie ever. Being German I can tell you that the way he is using his Austrian accent is putting his arrogance into overdrive.

Great movie, but if you don't like subtitles then you shouldn't see it.

Best film I've seen this year, and really going forward I don't know what could be a more enjoyable film to see. Christophe Waltz carries this film and is great as the uber villian to Brad Pitt's uber hero.

There are people that don't like subtitles? I got over this when I was 12.

Yea, I agree that subtitles shouldn't deter you from seeing a movie, but I understand the counter-argument that it's hard to enjoy what happens in the film if you're too busy looking at the bottom of the screen and reading.

I've gotten so that if a movie with subtitles is really good, when I think back on it I don't even remember the subtitles being on the screen, just that the character said it. So far this has happened with Amelie, Nightwatch, Run Lola Run, and Inglorious Basterds. Such an awesome movie, and I personally hated Kill Bill.

This film is for the PULP FICTION/RESERVOIR DOGS/DEATHPROOF fans and less for the KILL BILL fans. Especially People who loved KILL BILL 1 will probably not like this film that much. This is Tarantino building the suspense and tension of scene with super long drawn out takes with seconds of release of humor and violence. Dialogue reins king in this film.

I thought this film had a massive spaghetti western style espicaly the first chapter and also the music through out. But one thing I found quite interesting is that it showed that both sides were just as bad as each other rather than going for an obvious - 'Germans = Evil' which made for a far more engrossing film over all. But don't you think the subtitles added something to the film, again I really mean in the first chapter of it.

Agreed about the spaghetti western feel, Quentin is great at generating a tense atmosphere and uses it in most of his films.

As for showing both sides as equally bad. I think the Nazis were still portrayed as being way more deserving of an ass whooping than the allies were. Is there a particular reason why you think they were portrayed as being equal in the "evil" level?

Why? I'd guess and go for a bit of an airy fairy answer and say that it's to show that people of any race can be 'evil' if they believe in what they are doing or if they are told to do so by what they percive to be an authority figure. I mean there are examples even in modern times where people are doing what they know to be wrong simply because they are following orders, the Milgram experiment for instance where normal members of the public delievered what they believed to be leathal shocks to a stranger simply because a man in a white coat told them to.

So the men under Pitt - following orders, and that young German girl - doing what she believes to be just. Would you not say that the Jewish people in the film were portrayed as equally evil?

But that was just an after thought to a good film. Curiously was there any special end scene after the credits? I was coerced into leave by my mate who was my lift back so I didn't get to see.

It appeared that Pitt's men and the German girl were killing Nazis and the Nazis were killing civilians. I'm still not seeing the equality here, even if they were just "following orders".

The factions:

The fictitious basterds:
kill anyone in a German uniform for revenge

The fictitious Jewish Girl:
tries to kill anyone in a German uniform for revenge

Hardcore Nazi guys:
always in SS uniform, experts at escalating every conversation in the movie. Especially in the bar scene, but also everytime Landa is onscreen.

Regular Wehrmacht dudes:
never portrayed as that evil, at times peacefully binge drinking, but ultimately too obedient to be nice guys.

Pvt Zoller:
the dumb hero too naive to see the evil he is basically doing.

The moral of the story:
Traitors survive. All of them. The farm family hiding the Jews in the beginning survives (they would have died on the spot in real life if being caught harboring Jews like that). The Wehrmacht private betraying the position of the other patrol survives. Landa survives by betrayal. Even Donny thought he was betraying himself by striking a deal with Landa. Stick to your principles and you are dead meat in this movie. Especially Melanie and Zoller.

I'm pretty sure that farm family was the same family running the bar in the bar scene. They sure as hell die! One or two of the sisters may have been absent but I know the father and one of the daughters gets killed. And the Private and Landa both got swastikas engraved on their foreheads.

And the reasons the Nazis are never portrayed as evil is because it is a forgone conclusion that 'Nazis = Evil'.

A little late to the party, but I saw it last night because it was the last night of showing at my theater and only cost me five bucks.

I thought this movie was ridiculously over the top and very signature Tarantino. I was entertained for the most part, but found the ending a bit lackluster. I was hoping for a daring rescue of Lt. Raine and his buddy from the rest of the Basterds and a ridiculous shoot-out, but it still delivered the goods.

Not the best movie of this summer, but still worth my money and the eventual Blu-Ray purchase.

For me, it was Star Trek, but this is right up there, along with Up and District 9.

Just saw this finally. It was my least favorite QT flick, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. The final half hour was hysterical. Pitt's Italian accent, the flaming, cacking Jew chick's visage in the theater, Eli Roth (or the other dude) turning Hitler's face into hamburger with a machine gun... Just too much fun.

That no-name German dude who played the main Nazi was a fucking tour de force. Best villain in any recent movie, and totally blew the fucking pants off Dead Ledger's overrated Joker.

Agreed (except for the Heath Ledger bash). I think he should get an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor.

You mean Hans Landa? I thought the dude who got his nuts blown off by Hugo Stiglitz was way more sinister.

Inglorious Basterds

Postby MelaniaDot » Jul 22nd, 2018 @ 7:53pm

Even though I not have seen Valkyrie, I can assure you that this movie was little in common with it.

Inglourious Basterds opens like a spaghetti western sort of and ends like Carrie sort of. In between, there is a lot of discussion about film and human behavior. The plot moves along at a deliberate pace and the story perpetuates as several smart and not-so-smart characters attempt to work their way through sticky situations of varying degrees. When action does occur, it’s very intense and very graphic.

In short, this is typical Tarantino film. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of his movies including Death Proof and I can say the same thing about this one.
