The Geekbox: Episode 109

Postby Rydog » Mar 17th, 2011 @ 12:22am

This week's episode is all about PAX East. And a bunch of music talk that I don't understand because I'm dumb.

There's a little bit, but really there isn't too much to talk about. Karen covers all the basics, but what I took away from it was "Hey, this is totally more Portal." Which is a good thing.

42 minutes in during the Ken Watanabe reminded me of the fourm when it started sounding like it was getting derailed.

I probably found Karens Portal 2 plot description funnier than I should have. She got like one thing right.

Sleeping with celebrities section was really funny.

If the podcast had indivdual titles that should so be it.

Also besides Christina Hendricks and Karen Gillan I didn't get the dudes choices. To each their own I suppose.

AHAHAHA YES! Master Higgins girlfriend has a thing for Gackt! That is awesome.

Gackt's a Japanese rock star that can go from looking like a dude to a chick. So a little something for everyone.

Good to know - I saw Red when it was out at the theaters and really liked it, but didn't get a chance to see The Losers even though I've had it on my DVR since it showed up on HBO. Will have to give it a shot this weekend.

I'm shocked nobody knew Quinto is gay. Seriously? That came out before even the first season of Heroes finished!

There was other stuff, but that wiped it out for me.

karen i would just like to say the train/subway system in boston is extremely easy to use, i had to take like a 45min ride to even get to the convention center.
edit:and for the whole booth babe thing, i have no problem with attractive women wearing tight clothes advertising a video game to me and for what karen said about like people complaining about familys being there and stuff, i guess they should never let their child into a city or on a beach during the summer. but the cosplay was pretty bad too with that. saw 2 girls asked to like either leave and change and come back or somehow make their cosplay longer cuz their asses were hanging out.

Well he's a rock star primarly (dude has like 14 albums with sales over 10 million and a bunch of singles) but ya when he does random stuff like that it's a joke about how dude is kind of effeminate looking.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktXe3RuY6EI&feature=player_detailpage#t=222s

So ya with stuff like that I think he's just being funny about it. He's got kind of a quirky sense of humour at least from the couple random cameo things I've seen him in.

Where in Indiana do you live?

The music industry is such a mess, but Steve Jobs is not part of its downturn. If anything, he's keeping it afloat. He proved with iTunes that easy is a better alternative to free.

At some point, mediocre artists used the single mentality to their advantage, recording one or two top 40 singles on an album, forcing listeners to buy the entire album filled mostly with filler tracks for those precious few songs. Very few artists today actually craft an album start to finish with care and precision with quality tracks.

As Justin said, this will force good artists to rise to the challenge and leave mediocre artists in the dust.

That being said, I'm at the tail end of that "listen to an album start to finish on shuffle with headphones on" generation, and it was a pretty awesome thing.

If you want to find albums that are crafted as an actual album you should probably look in to indie bands.

Five of my favourite albums from last year are Forgiveness Rock Record by Broken Social Scene, Cloak and Cipher by Land of Talk, Les Chemins de Verre by Karkwa, Self Explanatory by Classified and The Five Ghosts by Stars.

Also Karen mentions The Blue Album but not Pinkerton?

The movie was a lot better than the mediocre comic. It seems like Warren Ellis creates a lot of those miniseries with the sole purpose of farming them out for more fleshed out film adaptations. I've read a couple of his short ones (Red, Mek, Reload) and they seem like merely ok ideas that don't really get fleshed out all that well.

Really wanna check out Planetary some day.
