The Comic Conspiracy: Episode 11

Postby Master Higgins » Jun 6th, 2011 @ 9:52am

Yay, another episode! Talking lots of DC reboot and X-Men: First Class. That's pretty much it!

Fuck Barry Allen. Flash: Rebirth was a shitty return and he should've stayed dead.

Jim Lee is not over-hyped. And no, it's not because he's Corean.

He really is that good an artist because he's one of the few artists that actually takes anatomy into consideration, unlike that shitbag, Rob Liefeld.

It's just unfortunate that he's been paired with really bad stories, like Hush and For Tomorrow.

Again, DC must address the problem of Dick Grayson.

He outgrew Robin, retired Nightwing, earned the cowl, and finally proved he's every bit Batman as Bruce. Now he's being, for lack of a better term, demoted.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Nightwing. Chuck Dixon's run on Nightwing was one of the best until Bludhaven got wiped off the map. He moves to New York and finally shows he's one of the best DC heroes around, but he still can't escape the moniker of "Batman Lite."

Personally I'm excited about the dc reboot, but I realized something when I was going over my pull list for the week.

There is a term . . . I forgot what its called, but its basically where this guys company made a product that went on sale, but announced the new version of it. Instead of buying what was out, people waited for the new version.

I totally feel this way about DC right now. Any of there books that are out I'm not going to pick up because its all going to be irrelevant in a few months. I know that they had to announce this now because of solicitations, but I wonder if their sales will tank over the next few months because of it.

Then again I guess it doesn't matter much to them because the comic stores have already ordered the books. Its the comic book stores that may get stuck with them.

Yesterday, I attended a X-Men First Class matinée showing, and enjoyed it immensely.

Ryan if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend catching it while it's still showing on Century 22's enormous center screen (the dome theater over by Winchester & Olsen).

One minor quibble was dropping a F-bomb in an X-Men story, but the timing in which it was uttered was pulled off with such panache, I couldn't help but chuckle.

The film isn't perfect. For all her jiggle and shimmer, January Jones delivers a rather lackluster performance. Fortunately, Jennifer Lawrence (Raven/Mystique) makes much better use of her screen-time. The best compliment I can this film is that I was entertained, and more so than I would have predicted.

Admittedly, I'm very well-versed in DC history and lore to appreciate Ryan's Earth One theory, but it sounds plausible.
I'm going to make a DC prediction of my own.
I suspect Terry Moore will be on a title. I'm not sure which one, though if he has his way it would probably feature a leading lady. I don't have much in the way of evidence to support this theory other than a statement he made during his April 2011 WonderCon panel, where he said (and I'm paraphrasing here) - There are some big technological changes in store. I'm not at liberty to say more, only that the change is coming sooner than you think.
In retrospect, I'm fairly certain he was referring to DC's recent digital announcement. As to whether or not he'll be on a DC title is purely conjecture and speculation on my part, but I'm fairly certain he had insider knowledge as to what was brewing.

Thanks, Ryan. You finally managed to confuse the hell out of me. But dont worry, Ill manage. :D

Im actually quite excited for the DC Reboot. Being a newcomer to the DC comics, It will be interesting to actually be able to pick up an issue brand new and enjoy it with everyone else. Right now, Im goin doing lots of catch up and exploring with JLA, Green Lantern, Batman, etc. But just because it is being rebooted (granted, from what Ryan theorizes, its not exactly a full-on reboot), doesnt mean everything that has happened before is rendered pointless. Im still real interested to explore all the major arcs and events, such as Crisis on Infinite Earths, Blackest Night, Brightest Day, Flashpoint, etc. From where Im standing, its rather interesting and I cant wait to finally be a part of the discussion. :D

Higgins, your explanation on Infinite Crisis (or was it Crisis on Infinite Earths??) has finally managed to baffle the mind directly out of my fucking head. Congratulations, I may never be able to form a coherent thought again as long as I live. You've saved the Geekbox forums.

To show that I and this podcast are not completely DC focused, I'll share this:

I picked up Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man 159, and holy fuck, is it awesome.

Higgins and Brock, please discuss this on the next show.

The Ultimate books are just soooooo bad, now. I tried a few times to read them, post-Ultimatum, and they're just terrible. How long as Peter been dying? 4 issues?

You're right, they are bad post Ultimatum, but it's Bendis and Bagley. They've kept the Ultimate Universe afloat for a decade now.

And in answer to your snarky question he got shot last issue and now he's bleeding out.

Marvel's Ultimate Universe is garbage.

And here is my two cents about the Death of Ultimate Spider-Man:

"How many issues did it take for you to bleed out Peter?"
"Four I think. My death was a fuzzy experience mixed with my spider sense buzzing non stop."
"Are you dead yet?"
"No."
"What the fuck! Die already!"
