The Geekbox: Episode 125

Postby Rydog » Jul 5th, 2011 @ 11:37pm

There's a first time for everything: I'm MIA from this week's podcast (my dad had heart surgery today -- and yes, he's doing great!), but my awesome team saw the show through in spite of it all. Karen's also out due to medical issues; hers are doggie-related, so let's all wish her (and her dog Cisco) well.

Enjoy, and hopefully we'll ALL see you next week!

Glad to hear that both are doing great.

Was looking forward to more TF2 commentary. Maybe persuade the others to join.

I enjoyed this episode!

Early TMBG is the best TMBG in my opinion. TMBG used to be known for putting dark and weird lyrics over poppy drum machine music. Now (probably since they had the most success with Flood) they mostly release goofy stuff. Both are good, but I feel like the early stuff is more distinct and the subject matter is generally more interesting.

Luck to Ryan and Karen :)

Sorry, Higgins, but G1 Transformers has not held up by any means. There's maybe a dozen episodes total that aren't brain-melting horrid in either the animation/writing department or both.

Megatron gets drunk in one episode. Nuff said.

Didn't really want to compare, but those shows have their own problems as well. He-Man has so many homosexual undercurrents, I'm surprised I'm not gay after watching that. And Thundercats had Snarf. Really hard to redeem that show with that character. At least the relaunched Thundercats has a Snarf that can't talk.

I had no issues with the homos on He-Man.

My main issue with He-Man is that it used the Hanna Barbera model of making animation.

Have a pre-set animation for talking, walking, fighting, transforming, ect. AND RECYCLE THE SHIT OUT OF IT.

They only changed the background and VA and they had a new ep.

There are other cartoons that did this, but for some reason even as a kid i noticed this on He-Man the most.

Saddened to read that he/she didn't make it.

*pours to the floor*

Edit: OK.. I'm on the Sex and the City part of the show. While I will not defend the show on the basis that is not my kind of show, Most of Justin's comments on the show seem to stem from the first season (even go as far as to say the first few episodes). I'm the one to argue that first seasons and mostly pilots and first few episodes tend to be terrible and usually try to over sell the point of the series. It is IMO the second half or second season of the show in which said show finds their own voice without overselling just one. Even great shows like Mad Men suffer from this. The first few episodes of Mad Men oversell the fact of how racist, misogynist, jew hating and male dominated were the 60s. Eventually the show grew out of that and it became more about the characters.

I hate Sex and the City. And I can say that because I've watched all of it (except the movies). There are lots of genuinely funny and entertaining bits, and definitely isn't the herp-derp show a lot of people make it out to be. I hate it because it sells itself as being this 'empowering' show for women, when in fact it's anything but. Also, I want to stab half the characters in the face for being annoying and stupid.

This. The lesson of the show seems to be "women are objects, so make yourself the best one in the crowd". That's not empowering, at all.

I still find the old He-Man and Transformers cartoons enjoyable. They really are good for a laugh every once in a while, especially He-Man.

Good episode!

If Fitch is talking about the Shattuck UA7 theater, that place is a total dump. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if half the seats there were cum-stained.

Quit listening a half an hour in cause I need some sleep, gonna finish it tomorrow, just want to say that The Emperor's New Groove really is a great movie. It's unique for a Disney movie in that it's a pure comedy. It's not a children's animated feature film, it's not an animated musical epic, it's a motherfucking comedy, and it's funny as hell. The voice actors really bring it (except for John Goodman, he brings a boringly traditional Disney vibe), the writing is sharp, and the site-gags are great.
