The Geekbox: Episode 142

Postby Rydog » Nov 1st, 2011 @ 11:57pm

This week's episode reunites the regular cast, and features even more Batman: Arkham City chatter -- including a rundown on one of my all-time favorite video game boss fights. Mid-game spoilers abound, if anyone's wondering!

She did say she was hipster Chun Li at the office and that pic looks like a hipster Chun Li at an office.

I think I got a D on the racist test. I could tell it was Karen, but then I briefly bought kenzo's opinion about it not being Karen and thus being racist for believing so, but was vindicated upon listening to the podcast. I think this means I'm racist for trusting an asian to be able to tell other asians apart for me

I didn't look at the main page until I was about 15 minutes in and saw kenzo's post.

Also that is the worst Arab accent I have ever heard from Adam. Sounds like Punjabi rather than Arab. If Ra's was from Pakistan or India that would be more believable.

Jesus. Haven't been lurking on the boards for a while. Avatars are huge...

Uh, anyways, about "Hetalia!" First off, It isn't really a hard word to say..... but uh, putting that aside, it's a pretty funny series. Though, almost nothing like what the geekbox crew in this podcast described it as....
Most of them don't look like kids most of the time... And the majority of them are actually male.... Which tends to make it popular with the sometimes creepy "fan-girl" crowd which has the effect of turning some people away. But It actually is a good show/comic strip. And yeah, it can be oddly/amusingly educational. It's through Hetalia that I learned that Americans adding food coloring to sweets apparently freaks Japanese people the hell out. Hah. http://hetalia.livejournal.com/3106538.html
It makes fun of pretty much every country out there. ((like so~. read right to left.)

You can watch episodes legally and free on Youtube (Funimations channel) and the strip translations are fairly easy to fine too. Here's some simple character intro's though http://sites.google.com/site/hetaliaind ... troduction .

So in conclusion, uh, it's cute.

Hetalia is funny. It also has a massive cult following that mostly consists of girls and women. BTW for those that are unsure it's pronounced like Hey-ta-lee-ah

Also Germany is not really a Nazi, he just works for one. (he once mentions having a crazy boss, which is a reference to Adoplh Hitler) Basically during WWII he was just following orders, which goes with his personality and the stereotype of Germans as hard working, bureaucratic/by the book and headstrong.

They are more like teenagers, (and mostly young men) Master Higgins. Also they don't really just act out the events of WWII.

It's more a comedy that pokes fun of stereotypes and historical relationships (and current) between the different countries that are represented in Hetalia. The cast of characters also is fairly large, (I think it's around 40 something now) it started off with just the Axis Powers and the most prominent Allied Forces. Although sans much of the British Commonwealth, however Canada is there but most of the nations don't notice him due to his unobtrusive nature, which is a joke based on the stereotype of Canadians supposed politeness and meekness. Likewise America is depecited as loud, boisterous, headstrong and a self-proclaimed hero. Dude also loves hamburgers and has an alien friend named Tony. (who looks like a Grey)

For further example, France is very romantic, hits on everyone and has a deep sibling rivalry with England. Russia is kind but also kind of insane due to his long bloody history and is scared of his yandere* sister Belarus who is obsessed with forcing him to marry her. Funny enough Russia's character himself is somewhat yandere* particularly to the Baltic States, which is kind of a historical reference to their time under Russia during the Soviet Union.

However as time went on the author of the web-comic (and the manga) started adding in all kinds of characters from ancient empires like Rome and the Holy Roman Empire to small island nations like Sealand and Seychelles.

*portmanteau that refers to a character that is sociopathic for someone else and is usually posessive or obsessive about the person for who they have an very deep affection. Usually they try to appear cute as a cover for their dangerously unstable personality. They are usually female and are basically like a more intense version of your psychopathic, possessive, jealous ex-girlfriend.

The manga and web-comic are better than the anime. However to Karen's interest in buying the manga, unfortunately only two volumes of the manga have been localised. Reason being that Tokyopop who had the license for the manga in NA went under earlier this year so currently the license for Hetalia in NA is in limbo. (Although Tokyopop does hope to restart publishing manga sometime in the future, which it has relayed on Tokyopop's official Twitter and Facebook page)

Funimation has released the first two seasons of the anime (which are a bunch of 5 minute shorts) and will be releasing the movie sometime in the near future, though. Also as Lovely said you can find the anime subbed and dubbed on Funimation's Youtube channel, you can also find it both dubbed and subbed streaming on Funimation's Hetalia website. However, the dubbed from their website is hosted through Hulu so you can only watch it within the U.S. or through a U.S. proxy. Which is a shame because the dub is actually quite funny. Also only the first four episodes are dubbed, which is I imagine to give you a taste of the dub enough to want to buy the DVD.

Most likely because they can't really compete with a bunch of fan-subbers posting up pirated videos but those same people are typically elitist about subs so they are unlikely to go and put up dubs because they vehemently hate any and all dubs regardless of if they are good or not.

Example of the dub from promo videos for the DVD release.

I can't believe they talked about WoW and moe for a combined like, 20 minutes. What a worthless podcast!

Higgins, if you wanna see Schindler's List: the Anime, you should look into a show called Rainbow: Something Something Something. It's about teenagers who (wrongfully) go to prison and get beaten/abused/raped.

Hetalia talk was kind of funny, although a big part of that was the wild speculation about what it's about because Higgins only had the most cursory knowledge of the web-comic/manga/anime. I'm going to guess probably from seeing some chicks cross-playing (most of the characters and the most prominent ones are dudes) as some of the different characters at a con he went to and than overheard someone mention it's from Hetalia.

Hearing Karen complain about the fake spoilers compelled me to share what I wrote on Facebook in a comic group:

Finally beaten Arkham City. The ending fight was crazy, but the ending itself was crazier: Joker got a sex change and settled down; Mr. Freeze FINALLY cured his wife, only to have her divorce him; Harley Quinn decided to fulfill her life-long dream of being an Antarctic researcher; Bane started a chain of tofu restaurants; Deadshot became a priest and is helping orphans in Nigeria; Penguin became a Buddhist and retired to China; Two-Face received plastic surgery and changed his name to George Clooney; Catwoman settled down with Bob, her accountant, and Poison Ivy is their children's godmother. And Batman finally became a real boy!

Paul Dini really knocked it out of the park.

Something I've noticed about comic fans that I don't understand is that they consider character appearances, even down to minor cameos spoilers. Higgins is whining about this shit all the time on the Comic Conspiracy. A character appearing in a movie of video game isn't a spoiler to me, it's an incentive to see/play it.

My theory is that comics are so formulaic and predictable that the only thing they do that's surprising to the comic-fan these days is which character makes a cameo.

Now, don't get me wrong, Normally, I'm a HUGE fan of dubs but.... Not so much so for Hetalia. I mean, in THEORY, I should love the Hetalia dub, lots of accent fun. Buuuut, in practice, the pace of the shows dialog/humor tends to be fast, and that combined with the accents actually makes it kinda hard for me to follow :( .

....Alright. I'll stop hijacking this thread with random anime stuff now.

Never seen the anime for Barefoot Gen, but read the comic. And as fucked up as certain parts are, there's still lots of gags, jokes, and positiveness of people trying to get by, whereas Grave of the Fireflies and Rainbow is almost all sadness-porn.

I haven't seen all of the dub for Hetalia but the parts I have seen I found to be funny and clever.

I've never seen Baccano dubbed do they have appropriate accents? It would be cool if they did, Firo talking like an Italian American gangster would be cool.

Just want to say that I agree with Ryan on how the Batman games need to escalate. There needs to be a co-op Batman game with an open Gotham City and access to multiple members of the Batman Family. There'd be Batman, Nightwing, Robin (Damian Wayne), Red Robin (Tim Drake), Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), Spoiler, Catwoman, Huntress, Batwoman, Renee Montoya Question, blah blah blah. If we want to get really crazy there could also be the Birds of Prey, The Outsiders, Ace the Bathound, and Bat-Mite. Though I have to give props to Ryan for coming up with a good title. I would have called it something lame like Batman: Reunion or just straight up Batman Family.
