The Geekbox: Episode 148

Postby Rydog » Dec 14th, 2011 @ 3:58am

This week on The Geekbox, we talk about the Spike VGAs, TV's dumbest video game awards show. Fortunately, we're preparing for the 2011 Geekbox Awards, so suggest some fun categories for us to deliberate on!

I did not watch the Spike VGAs (never have) but from listening to the folks at Giantbomb talk about them on their podcast it sounds like Justin is talking about some obscure foul mouthed Youtube user who complained about the VGAs last year and not a rapper. Unless he's talking about Will.I.Am who I understand was also there.

Also 133 hours. That's a lot of Skyward Sword.

Oh and Justin, if you want to see an award show about videogames and the people who make them isn't the GDC Awards streamed on the internet?

Really liked this episode. It was funny.

Also, I came up with a random category that might not make any sense. Basically one podcaster has to do something, or give something up, in exchange for another podcaster to do the same. It has to be a difficult thing that niether podcaster would ever willingly agree to do, the best gridlock wins. These would be based on the memes established through out the year and it would be playing off the podcasters irrational likes and dislikes... for example.

Best Geekbox Hostage Exchange Program:
Ryan Scott watches all of Twin Peaks / Ryan Higgins plays all the Metal Gears
Karen Chu divorces Patrick / Adam Fitch divorces Japan
Justin stops spoiling stuff / Adam stops doing British accents
Karen gives up wikipedia / Higgins gives up comics

Does anyone understand any of this?
I stream games some times. Come and watch www.twitch.tv/darfox8 These are my Highlights.

To Adam Fitch's question of whether canny is a word.

Canny

Pronounced kani

adjective
1. Having or showing shrewdness and good judgement, especially in money or buisness matters. ie. Canny investors will switch banks if they think they are getting a raw deal
2. Northern English and Scottish pleasent; nice: ie. She's a canny lass

Also of note apparently it sounds like another word to some people when a Geordie says it.

Voiceactors make the most on doing voiceover on commercial advertisments is my understanding from talking with a couple voiceactors before. Also I would argue that voice acting is quite different from screen acting, which is why most screen actors that do voice work are terrible at it.

I have to disagree with Adam in regards to 2061 and 3001. They were pretty good and it explains a lot of what happens to Dave Bowman and HAL-9000 after the events of 2010. Also I think it was explained in the foreword of 2061 that the events of the 2010 movie and book are two separate timelines, but I can't remember if they were ever reconciled in 2061 or 3001.

It's true. And anyone who says that it's better than the original probably had a lobotomy or an extra chromosome.

Voice actors get paid pennies compared to real actors; Sam Jackson makes an appearance in a film for nothing short of a million bucks.

I have to disagree with both of you because clearly The Boss AI chose to sing instead of fight, renewing detente and ushering in a new era of world peace.

And yet, it's the Geekbox crew that decides the winners - asking them to decide the winner to something they have no clue about is retarded.

I think you missed my point. I was just saying that of the roles most voice actors do they make the most on commercials and television, film and videogames are all significantly less. I wasn't talking at all about what they make compared to screen actors. After that was just talking about how comparing screen actors and voice actors as the same thing is a misnomer since they require different talents and usually a dude from one end isn't that great on the other.

Speaking of comic remixes of "Poker Face", my friends and I beat you to the punch and already wrote/recorded a parody of "Poker Face" entitled "Happy Face" that samples this classic clip:

Oh, oh oh oh ~ oh oh oh oh ooooh
This is my happy face, mah ha-happy faaaaace

Or, call the third game Gotham Knights, have it take place in all of Gotham City, and have other Gotham-based heroes as playable characters in optional side-missions. That would make the most sense, in my mind. Also, how can 6.8 billion people live on the moon? Last time I checked, the moon isn't that big.

It should be called "Batman: Turtles in Time" where Batman and his villains get thrown back in time and he has to fight through them and history to get back to the present.

I did until this post. Now I just think it's a name that won't live up to its potential.
