Even though I hatehatehatehatehate the art I got the first book of Chew cause someone was talking about it on Twitter. Haven't read it yet. The art is so bad.

Also I haven't listened yet but I can't help but feel like the "lots of Cable love" remark was sarcasm. We'll see. I personally don't like Cable at all and typically dislike all the time travel that goes on in X-men, but he was pretty cool at the end of Second Coming and it's nice to see him back kicking the shit out of the Avengers, most of whom I actually like less than him anyways. Speaking of shitty Avengers, Captain America sucks shit, just in general. Everybody keeps saying Brubaker's stuff with him is good but I can't bring myself to even try it cause Captain America is such a shitty character. I liked in the last Venom book where Flash hijacked his motorcycle. I like it when bad things happen to Captain America.

Even though you're turned off by the art, Chew is still a fun read. Everything I've read had been pretty funny and entertaining.

I actually just started his run recently. If you're expecting a lot of action, the Winter Soldier book is kind of a slow read and probably not for you. Though apparently he's fighting giant robots and shit in the new series, so maybe that's different.

Actually, there is a part in Winter Soldier where Crossbones (a Captain America villain, i think) beats the crap out of Cap. Maybe you'd like that.

I really liked the Winter Soldier story - probably the best Cap story since Mark Waid's run.

I didn't really like the Death of Captain America or replacement-Cap stuff. It wasn't bad, but I think Brubaker writes such a good Steve Rogers, and the replacement just wasn't as good a character, that it felt like a step down. I did like the Return of Captain America series, and I'm enjoying the new series, though it's got slightly too much fanboy-wankery in my opinion (the Ameridroid? Really?). Steve McNiven's art is always great, and I guess Alan Davis is doing the next arc, so the quality should stay high.

Brubaker is fundamentally a noir suspense writer, so his Cap is not as action-packed as that of some writers. He has his moments, though. And his characterizations are typically great.

Ryan forgot to mention when recommending Memorial (which I'm really looking forward to) Chris Roberson's probably best-known comics work: iZombie. Which is really, really good. Michael Allred - who otherwise has never really done it for me - does quite a good job on the art. There are a couple of collections out. It's not your typical zombie book - more of a lightly humorous soap opera with horror/adventure elements.

I read that issue of Memorial and it sucked shit. The writing was stiff as a board. It was full of very hand-holdy exposition that came off as patronizing and weakly presented. Also the main character had no personality or development to speak of. At all. And it's only a 6 issue miniseries! You've only got 5 more issues to tell an entire story but you haven't made me care about anything in it yet and we're 1/6 of the way through it.

The art was phenomenal though. Very detailed.

In other news, I sent a legit email question into the podcast, not like the last one where I was just trying to get them to talk about A League of Their Own on the air. I hope they read it sooner than 6 months from now. And I hope they read the part about Brock (it's not very mean).

Can I just say that Toby has firmly planted himself as my favorite member of this podcast? Mad props for all the great nods he's made over the last few shows, including Dean Yeagle, Frank Cho, and Catwoman: When in Rome, which stands as one of the best Loeb/Sale team-ups. For obvious reasons:

Image

Besides the sexy factor, the incredible coloring by David Stewart is some of the best he's done and makes Tim Sale's artwork pop even more.

The Archie cover in question (courtesy of superdickery.com):

Hooper X was right: Archie comics was all homoerotic undertones.

Dunno what your smoking, Higgins, but Ed McGuinness' art on Avenger's X-Sanction looks just as good as all his Marvel stuff. Super-manga-cartoony is his bag.

I'd be interested in knowing how old that was - especially since "beat off" didn't have the same implications forty years ago.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Batman Noel. I just read it and loved the art and the correlation of Scrooge and Batman. Really liked that Superman was the ghost of Christmas present.

Did Marvel put out a Holiday Special mag this year? Although they were just a mix of shorts I kinda liked it.

I own that comic cause the New Warriors are in it :)

I don't think any company did a Holiday/Christmas book this year...
