The Geekbox: Episode 187

Postby Rydog » Sep 26th, 2012 @ 11:45am

Sorry for the delay on this week's episode -- I was having some sort of random FTP upload issue with LibSyn's system. Anyway, it's up! And we talk about La-Mulana a lot, and laugh about the name "La-Mulana."

Yeah Dragon Ball Z had mad descriptive episode titles. I recall one is like "Chiaotzu dies and Tenshinhan has his final stand!!!" Another was like "Gohan is on his way home! AAHHHHHHHHH! Goku! Don't fall off of Snake's Way!!"

alltalk had a relatively good DBZ talk at the end this week.

No you're not. A *real* MGS fan, never mind the *biggest* fan in the world, wouldn't have such disparaging things to say about MGS3.

Waze is a good (and free) alternative navigation app for iOS.

Since day one of my iPhone 4, I've had a bookmarklet for Google Maps via Safari. And it's still there.

Cave Story is awesome! One of my favorite indie games of all time.

Food for thought on the WoW pets: you have pet wolves but not Worgen, similarly to how you can have pet pandas but not Pandarren. I'll probably play WoW again some day but my subscription lapsed when GW2 came out ... not enough time to invest in two major MMOs at the same time.

Yeah, Adam was right on talking about Doctor Who and...

Spoiler: show
Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was the main UNIT person and you might remember the finale from last year when the Doctor called a hospital and a nurse tells him that someone had died, they were talking about the Brigadier. IIRC, he started on the series during the Third Doctor's run.

Being anal about Doctor Who spoilers is like the most fucking hilarious thing of all time. I can't think of a more telegraphed television show of all time. For as bad as Lost was, it at least kept you guessing 90% of the time. Doctor Who, not even fucking close. So predictable. So unsurprising. So terrible.

No story genuinely surprises me anymore. My enjoyment is derived from the logical sense of how a story happens.

There are a few good ones. It's a shame nobody on the podcast as a clue as to what's really going on with the iOS maps and iOS in general. Apple never rejected a native Google app for iOS, Google has yet to even submit one. That came directly from Eric Schmidt last week. Apple's issue was that Google wouldn't allow turn by turn on the native maps app on iOS.

The Mapsquest app is good, has turn by turn navigation, and is free.

Doesn't change the fact that Apple terminated the contract with Google for providing the default maps app for iOS. And we'll see what happens when Google does submit a map app, but I think we all know what the impetus for Apple's decision to cut ties with Google was. Typical Apple control freak reaction. It's not surprising.

And I'm disgusted at Fitch for insisting on talking about spoilers in front of someone who hasn't seen the relevant content, when Fitch himself is so anti-spoilers about everything himself. Fitch, you're a hypocrite.

Apple wanted the turn by turn navigation in the app, basically the same app Google already had installed in Android. Google said no, Apple said fine we'll make our own. The most requested feature for the map app was turn by turn directions, Google was telling them no, what do you expect them to do? I'm sure Apple would LOVE to have the google maps app with turn by turn directions, it would save them a lot of money and time.

What are you talking about? They all asked the guy multiple times if he was okay with spoilers and he responded multiple times that he was okay with it.

As the offended party, I was not offended. I had the power to walk out of the room if needed. Plus they didn't really spoil anything more than I would have seen on a daily jog through the internet.
