I don't know how well Roald Dahl's work is known over there, but he is very very dark. There's The Twits, a book about two utterly horrid people who pretty much do awful things until it kills them, the follow-up to Chocolate Factory that has giant blood-sucking space leeches (vermicious knids), his short story compendiums that include dark retellings of Aladdin and Mary Mary Quite Contrary, the story of a pickpocket - sorry, fingersmith - and Danny Champion of the World, which is basically about the son of a poacher. There's tons more, but yeah, he's dark.
