tl;dr - I'm having surgery, see you guys in a few weeks.

Hi everybody!

Image

If you’ve been listening to the Comic Conspiracy or the Geekbox for the last year or two, you’ll notice I’ve been sick. A lot. Recently, it’s become worse. Starting in May, I've had the worst colds I can remember having in my life, almost non-stop. After a few weeks, I was put on two rounds of strong antibiotics after determining I had a sinus infection and an ear infection, which did little to help me recover. The doctor decided to run a CT scan, and discovered the left half of my sinuses were completely blocked, and I had developed several nasal polyps which have caused me to continue to get sick over and over. They scheduled endoscopic nasal surgery for the soonest possible time, so now I’m waiting. The surgery is happening the morning of Wednesday, August 6th, so we're hoping this will take care of the problems and relieve the side-effects, including cold and flu-like symptoms, massive sinus pressure, and headaches.

So what does this have to do with the podcast? Well, mere hours before getting ready to record today, my sinuses starting acting up again after a few days of relief. I waited and was hoping it would pass, but as we got set up, it was obvious there was no way I'd be able to talk for a few hours without having to step away every minute or two. As it’s the week after San Diego Comic-Con, we had a ton to talk about, and I feel terrible about missing the episode. Our current plan is to record an extra-long episode next week, discussing SDCC news, Toby’s trip to San Diego, and the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but I can't make a promise that I'll be well enough to record. It’s hard enough being at work and talking as little as possible. If we record next week, I'll release half the episode on Monday, August 4th and the second half after my surgery while I'm recovering on Monday, August 11th. If we're unable to record, there won't be a new episode until August 18th, but I’m going to try and not let that happen. I assume I'll be feeling close to 100% and ready to return to work and recording by August 18th, if not before! If there’s any changes, I'll keep people updated. Thanks for your understanding!

Ryan Higgins

I have had that surgery mate. You'll (hopefully) be fine.

Thanks, guys. I've had something similar done in the past, not sure how much is the same with this surgery. I actually think the previous one was more severe, but we'll see!

Welcome back Higgins. :)

I really hate this idea that people have that kids movies have to be dumb. As a small child I was aware when movies and cartoons were talking down to me. But I do agree with the cast when they said that the cream rises to the top - just wish there was not an acceptance of garbage kids movies(Alvin and the Chipmunks, Ice Age films, etc).

Does anyone want any toys or comic books related to the Michael Bay Transformers movies? I don't think so. Based on the stock of Age of Extinction toys at my local Target being untouched and the toys based on the IDW Robots in Disguise Transformers selling out I think the public has spoken.

Vin Diesel did a great job voicing Groot and has a great sense of humor about it

Great episode!
Agree 100% with all the turtles talk, Ernie Reyes Jr was my hero too!
About Michael Bay- I have a screen writer friend who reckons that producers more than anybody can shape the tone and direction of a movie because they hire and fire directors and other creative types. They also get to give notes and can push as hard as they like to have an explosion written into minute x or whatever. Remember Kevin Smiths horror story about John Peter?
So while I think this is very much a Michael Bay movie, its still not as bad as the Transformers films. It was just very meh.
The recent cartoon series is the best possible TMNT and Im amazed that this was a Nickelodeon film yet they took no lessons from the show.
Oh yeah, on Shredder- They did say that guy was playing Shredder amd the internet exploded so its possible they filmed an extra three scenes with that asian guys face to placate the crowd. Those scenes were very easily removable if you think about it and Sachs could easily have been Shredde in an earlier version.

OK Omar... Attack on Titan is good and worth watching but Kill la Kill is not. Maybe you'll like KlK because it's so perverted but I'd suspect animated boobs do nothing for you because you go for the real stuff but I don't know you that well so who knows.

My only problem with that Spiderwoman pose is that it's anatomically incorrect. That butt-cleavage is way too deep and physically impossible. Like, apparently, she doesn't have a tail-bone. It's just a poor illustration.

I dunno if you've ever heard of this medium called "comic books" but they are illustrated periodicals that occasionally enhance the realistic anatomy of females in order to appeal to and titillate adolescent boys and aging nerd manbabies.

You can enhance the physical form and accentuate features without completely breaking it. This breaks it.

That was a garbage discussion and you're all being idiots about this. The issue isn't that Manara did a cover. Aspen puts out like a dozen books a month with more objectionable covers. The issue is that they purportedly were aiming that book at women (announced at the Women in Marvel panel, what Hopeless has said about the book,) and then do a porny Manara variant and put Land on the art. Land on interiors (or the fact he's still working at all) is the way bigger issue than a variant, but if you can't understand why people are upset at that cover then you're being willfully stupid or a misogynist. Also I don't know how any of you can defend that piece in any way. Manara is talented (his Gamora was great,) but the anatomy and perspective on that cover are absurdly fucked up in addition to absurd oversexualization.

Finally, if I ever hear Omar call anyone a "triflin ass ho" or refer to women as bitches ever again, I'm done with the podcast. Next time there's a gender issue in comics news, just admit you guys can't talk about it in any kind of constructive way and move on.

I understand why people are upset about the cover, but like most "controversies" like this, it's just more fake anger. You admit yourself that Aspen puts out a dozen worse covers every month, not to mention Crossed "torture" covers, and dozens of worse covers. So why the anger over this Spider-Woman cover and not these other covers every month? Because Marvel announces the comic at a Women of Marvel panel or some other such lip-service? People online have some amazing sense of entitlement when it comes to Marvel and DC characters, it's amazing. They're corporate owned comics, not yours. If you don't like the comic because of a 1:100 variant cover that literally 10 people might buy, don't buy it.

Land is far from my favorite artist, but he's another artist that has been just dog-piled on by the internet comicsphere (who represent a fraction of actual comic customers, who are the only people that matter...if you're not spending money, no one cares, because sales are the only thing that matter). Manara is an amazing artist who has drawn porn for 40 years. All his previous Marvel covers have been sexual to some extent. If you think this cover represents men wanting to rape women or Marvel hates women or anything like that, I don't know what to say. No one cares about this except Comics Alliance and a handful of people on tumblr.

And then there's covers like this...

Image

Where was the controversy?

If you haven't read Manara's reply, it's worth a read. I can't find the drawing, but he actually does a reversal drawing to show the perspective.

http://www.fumettologica.it/2014/08/una ... americani/
Manara wrote:Browsing on the internet, I have seen that criticisms have two different directions. One points out to the sexy and erotic side; the other to some anatomical mistakes. About the incompetence in the drawing … I don’t know what to say. I just try to do my best, since 40 years to date. Nobody is perfect, and I may be wrong; simply, I’m a professional, so I do my best.

If you've listened to 170 episodes of all the dumb crap we say every week, you probably should know we're all just a bunch of dumb men who just like to read some comics. I'm not SJW Comics, I just like grown men punching things. It's topics like this just make me shake my head and laugh, because next week there will be some other controversy du jour.

Higgins, I'm not saying you're wrong about this particular issue, but the way you're going about it is bad. Like, there's nothing wrong with having a discussion on a subject. And you're beginning to sound as militant and close-minded as the people you rail against.

The thing is this exact same thing happens every few weeks like clockwork. The Tumblrs get a whiff of the hot new SJW scandal of the week and start the same big outcry all over again. This is not the first time this exact same thing has happened on this podcast. People are going to forget all about this by the time the book ships and then whatever bullshit the Arthur Geis's of the world can cook up next week will start the cycle over again. How about just not bringing this kinda shit up in the first place? By talking about it you're just giving the people that start and spread this tripe more power and they're going to keep doing it because it gets page views.
