I actually didn't like the anime of it that much, I liked the book far more. Maybe its because I read it before I watched it. So I hope people will read it. I think Imma have to break down buy another copy for them to read (it'll take far too long for me to find my own, plus I wouldn't want their hands over my book anyways lol).

Higgins' difficulty in getting the book were, he didn't want to pay for it lol.

We'll probably do mine and Charlie's bookclub at the same time, since I'll be off the podcast for a couple eps anyways. I do hope Bryce and Brock will read it.

Every other panel or page reading I was like "Oh man, I'm reading Batman Beyond, this is fantastic!" and then I'd realize, "Oh fuck, that's not Terry, that's time-displaced, hobo-Tim Drake, wtffff," and then I'd realize, "uugggghhhhh, this is FUTURE'S ENDDDDDD KILL MEEEEE" and then I'd see Batman Beyond do something rad and I would temporarily forget how awful this whole book is until I remembered yet again how fucking stupid it all is.

Fucking Brock man. So wrong about GTO. He needs to be forced to read all of GTO until he gives it the at least 9.5/10 it deserves. 5/10 is a robbery.

Haven't listened to the podcast, but I'm guessing Brock, as an educator, probably looked at the first chapter, saw the MC wanting to become a teacher to hit on high school girls, and then noped out of there. Which I totally understand, but that's not really indicative of GTO. Because first off, Onizuka is a stupid perv, but he always does the right thing in the end. Second, the only place he can land a job is at a middle school, and he has enough morals to be like "nope, gross" so he doesn't hit on any students pretty much ever again. On the contrary, he's Super Teacher and solves a lot of his students very realistic problems like a boss. GTO is fantastic. Brock buddy, it's becoming harder and harder to defend you man.

I wish there was an Americanized version of Onizuka. He's such an awesome character. I really think a young, 20-something "adult" that takes no shit and always does the right thing becoming a teacher to whip some smarts into bratty high school kids would work well regardless of the setting.

Finally Listening to the GTO discussion. I was right on the money with what Old Man Brock thought about GTO. I will say that his postulating that 'maybe it becomes a deeper comic and has some complexity and character development' is exactly what happens. I'm telling you Brock, as one educator to another, you'll really like where GTO goes and the stuff it does with respect to portraying a school and the issues of being a teacher and managing students. Only reading volume one is kind of doing GTO a disservice, because he first two volumes don't even introduce you to the main story and cast, they're just really glorified backstory for onizuka.

If you can't be assed to find the manga, watch the show. It's a really good adaptation and giving the story motion and voices really elevates the whole thing:
